I'm sure you guys have seen those maps for websites where all the members identify where they live. It might be interesting to try something like this for GDNet, although I'd bet that we'd blow up the map service's users database or something. Anyone else interested in something like this?

That sounds cool, I've never seen something like that before.

That's a seriously cool idea! And heck noone will take the time to get to this artic landscape to stalk me even if I disclose my location so i'm all for it :)

Maybe a link to a website that contains such thing????
Judging by your words, it sound cool

yeah sounds cool.

if it doesnt exist: making some embedded app cant be hard. each username only once, verified against the GDservers to prevent abuse, would that be possible technicly?

LJ ClusterMap showing peoples. I can't remember any others I've been on right now, so that'll have to suffice.

In the meantime it shouldn't be too hard to figure out something like this, as long as there's some way to get a user's lat and long. At least for Canada, USA, and Britain, it's possible to get software that takes a postal code to determine this, but the rest of the world might need a GPS unit. (Chances are even for countries where it's possible to get POCode->(lat, long) software, getting GPS co-ords would be better since there'd be fewer survey errors.) Then, plot out each person on top of a world map.

Sounds like a good idea, but I could see how people would abuse it. There should be an anti-abuse part to it also.

That definitely seems pretty cool, and with the bunch of great programmers around here, I guess it would suffice to make a community project for this or something like that... or maybe a solo work would be enough... dunno for sure

I can't see any real abuse possibilities beyond getting an approximate location on other GDNet members. Please explain.

cant you locate someone based on their IP adress? not by the centimeter but good enough if viewed from a global map right?

if so, all youd need is to click a link, enter your username and password, and if you can use GDnet for verification it gets registrated automagicly without any potential for abuse.

so everybody post heightmap data for their location (you all have that, right? [8^), along with location, and do the game programmers' version of a map.
We could just create a GDNet MMO and do away with the forums! Yeah! ;p

IP addresses are not any good for determining location. There is no guarantee that they are where their IP address seems to suggest, so the only way even remotely trustworthy is to get a PO code or actual lat/long position.

Youre right, you could be behind a proxy for instance

Why do we need the exact position? Just take the map from that site, make a click submit a form, and let users show you where they live. It won't be exact, but it would still be as interesting IMO.

Some of us want to give an exact location. Others will be willing to part with a PO Code. Some might only want to state the town or city they live in. And then some will want to have fun trying to pick an approximate location. I'd like to stick with options 1, 2, and 4 (that's assuming we're starting the list at item 1), although option 2 will be a bit of a pain and only supported for a few countries.

For the LJ clustermap, I picked my location approximately because I didn't have the option to give a more exact location via lat/long.

I'm not 46.2738°N 79.4441°W if that's what you were thinking, because I'm not. Seriously. Don't even bother trying to look for me there.
Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other
