can anyone recommend an exporter that works(exports to .x) for 3ds max 6 or 7. I have tried panda and it works ok for static models, but not models with animation. Could I be using it wrong, I have no real experiance with 3ds, but I presume you just open the 3ds file and export using panda and include options for animation,bones etc? Any suggestions? ps also tried TGXexporter to no avail.

I've used Panda to export animation files and it works beautifully. Even for skinned models!

You have to include options for animations and bones (if your model has it). Also make sure that frame hierarchy is turned on.

After that it's entirely upto you to load the frames and use the animation controller to animate the mesh. So maybe things are likely to be off at your end?

I have selected those options when exporting, what ver of 3ds are you using?, I tested the model in mesh viewer, it displays but without animation,if it had animation info it should show up here, am I right? I tried a lot of different combinations of export options in panda, but still ain't got it to work. I have notice that when I export using key options set to matrix and look inside the resulting .x file this is animationset

AnimationSet Anim-1 {

}

and when I choose position,scale and rotate I get

AnimationSet Anim-1 {

Animation Anim-Animated {

{ Animated }

AnimationOptions {
1;
0;
}

AnimationKey {
0;
1;
0;4;-1.000000,0.000000,0.000000,0.000000;;;
}

AnimationKey {
1;
1;
0;3;1.000000,1.000000,1.000000;;;
}

AnimationKey {
2;
1;
0;3;0.454325,0.000000,0.988441;;;
}
}

In mesh viewer - The first showed no animation
- The second picked up that there was animation data(anim-1) but displayed no animation.

thanks a lot for any help. Im tearing my hair out.

You know, I went through this same crap. Truth is there isnt really anything thats BEST gunna fit yer needs. I would just build yer own, if ya read through their IGameExporter and SDK, you will notice that it is actually pretty easy to write yer own. And it gives you all the info you specifically need and you can export to yer pre-existing model.

PS. Look at it this way, its a hellofa lot easier than writing an entire editor.
