"cartoon rendering"
i was wondering if anyone knew where i could find some good "cartoon rending" tutorials and techniques. the only good information i''ve found so far is this:
begin with a model, like a quake model(which this has already been done with), and reskin it with a cartoony looking skin. then take a copy of the model, but use all black, non-textured polys, and invert all the normals. combine the two models.
the result...a cartoony 3d model with black outlines in all the right places, making it look at least somewhat hand-drawn.
oh, the other result...double the polys. of course you should be able to reduce the polycount by half, easily. cartoons don''t need as many polys - makes then look less cartoonish. of course if you lose too many, you end up with PaRappa, hehe.
WOW! THAT''S IT? hehe, no...
another important part is the shading method when it''s drawn. cartoons don''t use goraud shading. they got that classic two-tone shading effect. i''m sure there''s plenty of different ways to make it look decent as i can think of multiple possibilities without really trying.
oops, i just rambled a whole lot. so anyone know where i should look for this stuff? i was thinking nehe needs a section for stuff like this. maybe somebody''s way ahead of me and can post a tutorial for us too.

bleh, i can''t run that demo. it requires an nvidia extension. too bad i have intel 810 instead of a GeForce2 GTS or something.
