Realistic Sniper Sims

Are there any realistic sniping games on the market? Granted, it seems that the market for these games would be small, but it would still be interesting. And I don't mean one where you aim at the head, and you hit the head. I mean a game that actually forces you to lead, use the mil-dots, figure out your angle to the target, and calculate wind and weather. Just curious, anyways.

Battlefield 1942 ^_^

EDIT: Not really but sniping is quite hard in that game.

America's Army had some pretty realistic sniping IIRC. There was wind, breathing, and and distance which averaged in to calibration.

I actually saw a sniper sim program (must have been a budget title, it along with other games where being sold in optical mouse combo packs). Right now the only proper sniper sim I know of is the sniping portion of America's army (and that's not a complete sim, since you don't have a spotter and there are no proper sniper only missions). Other "realistic-fps" games have sniper "modes", but those aren't really sims - expanding crosshairs does not a sniper sim make. Interestingly the first and second Thief game actually had something pretty close to "sniping" in the bow interface, it was fairly rewarding once you had mastered the difficulty curve and could pull off long range shots against moving targets. I've heard of "Silent Scope", but I'm not sure how accurate it is. I'd certainly be interested in any sniping games.

EDIT: Just looked up a review. Silent Scope, especially the home version, is totally useless.

Heh, yeah, I remember playing Silent Scope.

But no, AA is not realistic at all. Even in the SWS Schools, you hit where you aimed, even at 500 meters or so. I honestly think gamers would rebel if thrown a real sniper game - the training would be freaking crazy. Still, I wish AA would do that, I mean, we all sat through medic training and SF training, so I don't think anyone would really mind a couple hours of sniping school. Although, the missions that 18B are present in have maximum distances of about 200 meters anyways, so it might not even matter. Besides which, 18Bs aren't dedicated snipers anyways.

Well, no luck, I guess [grin]. Anyways, I suppose it might not go over too well with the public, anyways...

Well AA is the closest I've found, mainly because they actually take into consideration breathing (rather then just "if you point at this spot long for the crosshairs to line up your shot will go perfectly straight"). As I said Thief (even though you used a bow instead of a gun) really managed to creating a shooting/sniping experience where the player could develop a skill that was more then just getting a mouse pointer over a target. You actually learned to judge distances and correct your aim for gravity, and the aiming interface more accurately reflected a non-robotic grip - you fired by holding down the mouse to pull back the bow, after a second or so your eye would focus into the aiming slice on the bow, resulting in zooming. All through this the bow has a slight bob motion from your hand, the longer you spend trying to aim the more sevre it gets, until your hand gets too tired and your forced to stand down.

No and there never will be because no one wants to sit infront of a computer screen for three days waiting for their target to appear. ;)

Depends on the mission, doesn't it? The guys in Bosnia didn't do that (hell, technicals just kept wandering up and down the same damn street), and in fact, few times does that happen. Granted, a Marine in Vietnam actually did spend three days getting to his position, and one day waiting for the NVA commander to appear, shot him, and then got out.

the Hitman series actually had some fairly decent sniping, but still not totally reallistic. I have yet to see a reallistic sniper game.

Michaelson, yes, I've seen the sniper game before as well. It's called, gasp, "Sniper." However, you again have no spotter, and there were way too many screenshots that had the player weilding a shotgun or other weapon on the back of the box. It was basically a Hitman clone with the name Sniper tagged to it, so really it wasn't about sniping at all.

Cool, I might have to give that a shot. I still want to use my range tables and measure wind, though : /

Haven't tried CS Source, and probably won't, just based on the chaos that HL2 caused for my comp. I swear, the only program I have that crashes more often is Premiere.

I guess, to be fair, the only dedicated snipers in the US are Secret Service and Marines, and there are damn few of either. When snipers aren't needed, they get an MP5 thrown at them and go take down oil wells offshore of Iran. But I guess since I have Hitman, I should give it a shot (one of my many games that I've aquired from friends who got bored of them but still haven't played).

Heh. This is why I said that such a game probably wouldn't be looked on well by the public.

But just to clarify, no, I'm not... I'm from Texas, anyways [grin]

//edit. Yeah, forgot about that guy down at UT. But I'm not planning to make use of this!

I would argue that shooting accurately at 1,000 meters is probably difficult.

And certainly no, you can't learn the actual technique, barely more than you could learn from a book. But I don't own a SPR or M14, so it's not like I'm going to be donning a ghille suit, drop into hostile territory, and shoot people. Heck, even if I did own a rifle, I still wouldn't be doing that [grin].

Police Quest: SWAT, the first version, had a sniping portion to it. I remember the qualifying test was extremely hard, you did have to adjust for wind and stuff like that and you had a spotter. I don't think I ever mastered it, but it may be something along the lines of what you're looking for?

Ooh, I never played past PQ:2... I might have to drop by Fry's tomorrow and grab a copy of that. Thanks!

Yeah, as caffeineaddict said, the very original Police Quest: SWAT (back when - 1995?) had this, but it had terrible design flaws. It was fucking hard as nails to do the sniper test in that, because IIRC, when you were just practicing on the range the wind had no effect, but in the test it did (and if you missed one shot you failed). The game in general was a pile of shit though, all FMV and impossibly hard missions.
