Linkasaurus Rex Let me just say that this disgusts me. Basically, they're taking poor helpless innocent babies and slaughtering them, and then using their parts to create an evil army of killer babies, in a way reminiscent of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I urge all Americans to call your representatives, and urge them to abolish this horrible barbarian practice. I'm completely seriou*pffft* *snort* BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *cough* Yes. This post has been fully approved by Tron3k Industries. EDIT: Even more good news!

So what's the deal with this stem cell stuff anyway? I've heard all this stuff about finding more stem cells in umbilical cords and fat stores than in embryo's. But then again, I've also heard that evolution is "just a theory" so who the heck knows.

Seriously, who here knows? Anyone? I'm totally ignorant on this topic.

Stem Cells

Quote:
Stem cells are primal, undifferentiated cells which have the unique potential to produce any kind of cell in the body. Medical researchers believe stem cells have the potential to change the face of human disease by being used to repair specific tissues or to grow organs.

Of course, those amoral scientists don't mention the well-known fact that stem cells were created by Lucifer himself solely to tempt humanity. Duh.

EDIT: Wow!
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison coaxed human embryonic stem cells into becoming neural stem cells, then into the beginnings of motor neurons before finally differentiating into spinal motor neuron cells, the cell type that, in the human body, transmits messages from the brain to the spinal cord. The newly generated motor neurons exhibited electrical activity, the signature action of neurons. Researcher Su-Chun Zhang (http://www.waisman.wisc.edu/faculty/zhang.html) described the process as "you need to teach the embryonic stem cells to change step by step, where each step has different conditions and a strict window of time."
That is really cool! I guess that's why scientists really need the embryonic type, and can't make do with only the adult type as some people say. This research looks like it might help a lot of people to walk again one day!

Embryonic stem cell research was also just an easy concession to the religious right vote. It's not a hot button issue for most people who don't really care, but it does appease that faction -- whom it is hugely important to -- with little expenditure of political capital. Bush'll veto it for sure to keep his little faction's panties from getting in a proverbial wad.

Isn't that what the war is doing?

How can he say "dismemberment"? I believe we're talking about blastocysts here, folks. Blastocysts. When's the last time you shook hands with a blastocyst?

I just heard that on BBC world news, and I was asking myself the same question.

Although not an American, I'm fairly confident a presidential veto can be overthrown by a two-thirds (in favour) house vote regardless of the president's objections.

It realy does'nt matter, as soon as the 'miricle' doctor in china (the guy that makes people walk again by injecting them with stem cells, forget his name) reaches main stream press, thier won't be a god powerfull enough to stop the research.

^ wow, the implactions of that are impresive.

Say hello to the system of checks and balances, gentlemen. You can't really expect to have everything when more than half the country has beliefs that are diametrically opposed to yours.

I imagine that once biotechnology that relies on stem cells becomes sufficiently important and profitable, enough of right-wing America will change their tune to get us back on track. [grin]

Only that by that time it will be too late, as other countries will already have that technology.
