which 3d programs are best to make 3d models with animation ? what about md2 models ? what about integrating the models in c++/direct3d ?

For easy use in Direct3d you need to be able to convert the file to .x. Lightwave and .3ds files can all be converted to .x using conv3ds.exe or the 3ds plug in.

Of course, 3ds costs a couple thousand dollars, unless you can get it at academic price (then its a bargain at 1,000).

However, it is of course, possible to convert any file format to direct3d. If you want to use .md2, find some explanation of the file format of .md2 on line, write something that opens .md2 and converts them to vertex triples, or fans, or whatever, then use direct3d. . .

Good luck.

Lightwave 3D is relatively easy and fast and is in general the most widely used in the 3D industry (about 50% of it)
Most of the game industry tend to lean towards 3D Studio
Softimage is probably the best one you can get for animating.
Alias|Wavefront is good for characters.
Of course these are all rather expensive and I haven''t used any of the free ones so can''t tell you much about those.

What about TrueSpace 4.3?

Anyone tried that one yet?

Use Milkshape... it might not have the million-and-one features the other ones have, but for games it really has all that you''re looking for, and you don''t need to spend hours trying to learn it.

organtic modeling:
nendo all the way!
www.nichimen.com, free demo (no export features, just save/load native format)
and if i remember correctly, it supports output to .x format...

modeling is exellent, texturing however, i've seen much better (hehe, i only have a voodoo2 though, therefore i'm running software ogl... i haven't messed with texturing much... runs too slow)

DO take a look at it though, great product.... retail price: $100
