After viewing the 10 finalists in this year''s IGF contest I have to wonder about their definition of "Independent". Some of these games are backed by multi-million dollar corporations. Exactly how is that "Independent"? I used to think IGF was a cool idea to help really independent developers get a leg up but now I think it is a joke. Thoughts?

Which of the games are backed by multi-million dollar corporations? I was personally surprised to see Wild Tangent in there, since they don''t exactly seem independent to me. I didn''t look really closely at any of the others.

I know that the batch of entries last year really were independent, and AFAIK, the first year was the same way. It''d be sad if that changed.

Well Stabat Mater is backed by some multinational Korean firm with 60 employees. The one you mentioned. I don''t particularly consider Silver Creek an "Indie" game developer with numerous published titles. Nexon seems to be some commercial online company in Asia with several games out in the Asian market already.

There''s one or two others I didn''t look at yet but the point is none of the ones I mentioned strike me as being particularly "Indie". I see indie developers as the guys that hang out here and form little groups to try and make a go of it, not parties with significant commercial backing.

Of course, this is just my personal opinion and I may be all wet.

I don''t think they IGF focuses on companies, just the games. The games they submit cannot be backed by any major publisher. However, i do not belevie I saw anything in the submission rules about your comapny not being independant. But couldn''t that be unfair??
