Okay, here is my situation. Iv'e mentioned on these forums a couple times that I am off to college this year and it just so happens to be in Africa. Well I'm here now in my first week of school and I've had a rather unfortunate event occur that I was hoping I could get some help with. My computer, as of this morning has completely shit-out. It functions only to the first windows logo before degenerating into a blue screen of death. I tried everything but nothing works. If I use safe mode; blue screen of death If I try to re-install windows; blue screen of death If I try to use windows recovery consol; blue screen of death If I use dell or windows diagnostic CD's; no, not blue screen of death. Actually everything turns out just fine. Upon on reboot however; blue screen of death. I am so frusterated I tried using my calling card to call Dell, I cant dial a 1-800 number on it. I looked through all the troubleshooting, I tried EVERYTHING I can think of: even stupid things like reformating in DOS. NOTHING WORKS!!! Please, to anyone with even an extreme answer short of hurting my comp, I have nothing of value on the computer because I just re-installed windows yesterday, everything is backed up on CD's. Please please please someone have an answer!!! I also cant send it in to Dell from here so that is not possible either, I need it for classes, especially Arabic. Thanks in advance for anyone with a word of advice. Slowpid

what error do you get at the BSOD

Sounds like your BSOD on Windows start is a hardware issue. Is your hard drive ok? You may want to try a new one.

Also Win98 does not pick up SATA harddrives and gives a BSOD, put the bios in legacy mode (rather than enhanced). What version of windows are you running?

It would also help if you wrote down the actual BSOD message.

bsod =

technical information:
*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902FA, 0xF78C680C, 0xF78C650C, 0xF7415BBA)

*** Ntfs.sys - address f7415BBA baste at f7409000, datestamp 3d6de5c1

Thats it, exactly everything it says except the thing about "If this is the first time you have....."

So I am thinking also it is the harddrive but the diagnostics tell me everything is okay. I dont mind reformatting or anything but it bsod's me before I can.

Thanks for helping by the way, anyone else you helps thank you also. I am so stuck and frusterated.

Update: within DOS you can delete partitions, I used Fdisk to delete my C: drive, then used the reinstall disk like was supposed to. I hear lots of people have this problem with NFTS and it ususally degenerates into the purchase of a new HD, o well.

Thanks to all those who asked for more info to possibly give me help later!

I believe most dells have four diagnostic lights in the back labeled A, B, C, D.
They can be green, yellow, or red.
Google should be able to tell you what the codes mean.

Here are my guesses to what is causing the problem.

A recent change in Windows hates you. Try loading the "Last Known Good Configuration" when starting up Windows. Note that after you select "Last Known..." I think you have to hit "L" to make it go through? It's been awhile since I've done this.

You're harddrive might be upset.
If you can somehow manage to get to a command prompt, run "CHKNTFS C:"
Also, from Windows, go to Properties on the C: drive, click on the Tools tab, and hit "Check Now." Tell it to run a scan at the next reboot.

You may be overheating.
Make sure all vents are clear of obstructions and that all fans are running.
Also, some BIOS's will give you a CPU temperature reading.

But anyway, let me know what the diagnostic lights say. Those are probably your best bet at tracking down the problem.

Whoa. You have the same EXACT problem that my friend had with his dell. His computer was like 2 months old when it crapped out. After a few weeks struggling/yelling at the indian customer service reps, he sent it in and they had to replace the hard drive. Might want to bug dell about it. ;)
