Windows Media Player is acting weird, no surpise there. Whenever I go to play a song, it skips anywhere from 2-8 seconds of the beginning, and plays normal throughout the rest of the song. System Specs: Intel Pentium 4 2.80Ghz @ 3.40Ghz 2GB Corsair DDR 400 Integrated Sound Card Now I thought it was the sound card, so I hooked up a Sound Blaster Live! card, and got the same thing. Any ideas?

Did it always do that?

Do you download them songs or rip them off a cd?

WMP10 does this to me if it's the first thing I run or if the PC is under heavy usage. Is it only the first song you play, or is it every song?
Also, which file formats are you playing? Some codec packs install extra WMA codecs that can break WMP.

I don't think it matters whether it's ripped or DLed...

Does WinAmp or other players have this problem? I wonder if it's the codec.

how are games doing? have you tried another program like itunes?

and not to complain about you specificaly, but we just laughed somebody out of the lounge for asking about their FEAR game.

I think there are whole forums dedicated to issues of tweaking media players. I don'think every other thread in the lounge needs to be a computer hardware/software issue.

know what i'm sayin?

Winamp plays everything perfectly, but can't find half of my media in the My Music folder. Music is ripped, and it dosen't matter what I rip, still does it. Every song does this. No load, heavy usage, just booted up, dosen't matter, still does it.

Edit: Both WMA and MP3 formats do this...

Hi,

Could be codec related.

Have a look at what audio codecs you have installed and see if there is anything out of the ordinary (although it might be hard to tell :D )

To find what audio codecs you have installed go to you control panel, then sounds and audio devices, then hardware tab, then click on audio codecs and click on properties. Then properties tab again and there should be a list of installed ones.

You'll have to do some googling after that to see if there are any known issues with the ones you have installed.

It does make a difference if its downloaded, some places put a deliberate skip in so you don't/can't listen to it properly.
Yahoo Launch! did it (though you couldn't d/l...).

Do you have any kind of filter/visualization plugin setup in WMP?

Nope, nothing on at all, I actually have it in the media library section.

Another common procedure would be to run a spyware/adware/malware check ..although I haven't heard of any media player 10 exploits you can never be too careful :)

I regularly scan with both ad-aware and spybot search and destroy.

Also, for reference these are all the audio codecs my media player 10 currently has and it works pretty well....

IMA ADPCM
Microsoft ADPCM
Microsoft CCITT G.711
Microsoft GSM 6.10
DSP Group TrueSpeech(TM)
msg723.acm
DivX ;) Audio
Sipro Lab Telecom
Intel Music Coder
Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec
DivX WMA Audio Compressor
Windows Media Audio
Indeo Audio Software
Lame ACM MP3 Codec

...as a rule of thumb I also avoid those big audio/video codec bundles

Failing those two things you should definately ask on experts-exchange or tek-tips ...cause I have about exasperated my windows knowledge :D

I'm surprised nobody's suggested foobar2000 to you yet.
Alledgedly it's far superior to winamp etc, although I couldn't tell you, I tried it a while ago & didn't like the default interface, plus winamp works fine for my needs anyway. It's free though & supports massive playlists (which is supposedly where winamp falls down)

As for alternatives to Media Player's video capabilities, I'd suggest VideoLan (my personal favourite) or mplayer (plays anything you throw at it), neither of them require you to download extra codecs to get things working.
