Hi, I can't find an image viewer that supports annotations on an overlay and that comes with an API that let me output the annotation file apart from a software. Somebody must have done this before :o) I need to be able to generate an overlay file that contains informations on an image (preferably TIFF). The image is composed of a lot of dots so I want to "write" their positions on an overlay with a very small font so when I zoom on a dot, I see it's XY position (and maybe more information). I will have different overlays for the same image with different information. That's why I can't write directly on the image. I know that postscript might do the job but I can't find an API that let me write intermediate file in postscript format. I can show you a sample image if you want. Somebody have an idea? Thanks in advance Simon

There is nothing standard AFAIK. Just to see if I understood your request: you want to embed annotations as a vector image in a (TIFF) bitmap ? I believe TIFF has some free room to allow you to do so, but I don't know any software that allow you to do this (and no API as well).

Postcript is a bit overkill to do the job, so I guess you'd better use some kind of XML format. You'll probably have to do bothe the coder and the decoder - and probably the viewer, unless you can modify an existing one (irfan view? it can be extended using a plugin system but I believe you'll have to contact the author to get the plugin SDK).

Hello,

it's exactly that, except that the annotations could be store in a separate text file or whatever.

Your conclusion is probably the one we'll work on: build our own format(ex: XML), writing api and viewer. The thing is that it brings it's load of problem like deployment (the latest version), proprietary file format etc.

If we don't find something shortly, I'll code it myself.

Thank you for you input.

believe that you can have such a software coded quick and dirty with a higher level langauge such as C# or Java. This seems to be a very specific need, ou will not get away easyl with general purpose tools.
