Lets say you have a object made of 5000 polys, but you dont want to use a boundign box to cull it out. Is it posible to cull out individual polygons in real time? is it cost effective?

The reason you will use a bounding box is so that you have a region that you can cull. You need some type of quick mechanism to cull out large amounts of objects so that you can spend more time on other items. I would say that any other technique is either too costly or will hog your processor where it might be used doing other processing.

You might also look at occlusion culling.

I would say that if you are deciding to go with some other realtime culling technique that doesn't use bounding boxes to cull large amounts of objects that it can't be cost effective in my honest opinion, I stand under correction though...

I hope this helps.
Take care.
If someone else might be able to shed some more light it would be helpfull.

The graphics card does per-triangle culling. The point of a bounding volume is to cull out a lot of triangles with one test.

sure, you can cull every one of those 5000 tris, but it surely will be quite expensive, especially if you want to do that whole procedure for another object with 5000 tris... Culling 5000 triangles will always be a lot more of an effort than culling a bounding box (or bounding sphere, which is even faster) surrounding those 5000 triangles.
