Just out of curiousity, what is the standard resolution of a VHS tape?

dunno about a "standard" but 640x480 always did my VHS's justice.

Depends on the format. PAL is 768x576, NTSC is 640x480.

Isn't it based on encoding standard? So it should be NTSC in North America and Japan, and PAL in Europe. However, the format is restricted to approximately 240 lines per scanline (with 486 scanlines in NTSC and 576 in PAL).

Standard NTSC is 640x480
Preferred NTSC is 648x486
D1 NTSC is 720x486 (sometimes 720x480)
D1 NTSC Square Pixel is 720x540

PAL is 720x486
D1 PAL is 720x576
D1 PAL Square Pix is 768x576

...video is tricky business...

What about SECAM?

the resolution of SECAM is usually expressed the same effective resolution as PAL (768x576), but the subcarrier signal is a completely different animal.
