The JDK at http://java.sun.com comes with the Sun java compiler. You just have to type 'javac SomeFile.java' to compile a single file, which is what you'll be doing initially.

You can also go to eclipse.org and download Eclipse when you are ready for a nice IDE.

For SavitchIn, you just need to put the class file in your class path. Your teacher should explain all of this to you.

The main java compiler that you want is the J2SE java SDK. 1.5 is the latest version although a lot of people use 1.4.2 because it was pretty good. The link to start out at is here. Have fun learning java, it is a fun language.
