Hello, my name is Andrew, and I've wanted to create my own MUD from scratch now for at least four-five years. A man who created his own told me that he did it by himself when he was my age just by learning by himself. I've been trying to learn programming by myself for close to five years now, and I have very limited knowledge but I know my way around Visual Basic 6.0 decently, or at least I think so. He told me that it'd be best if I looked out on the net for a codebase and played with that first, so I did so and I found one. It was called smaug and I had to have a Unix shell installed on this windows computer before I could run it, but I finally got it going. However the code was in C, which had me dismayed, as I was way too ignorant at the time to understand what was going on. Over a few months I changed small things like weather, built rooms, and all that stuff but I could never do the things I wanted, like getting rid of automated combat, add more levels, and all that stuff. I realize what I really need is some people who know what they are doing with programming, and if possible know what they are doing with muds. If there is anyone out there who could help me program a mud in Visual Basic 6.0 from scratch please speak up. Im thinking that it'd be a Server/Client type program. I have an awesome imagination and a great love for role playing games and fantasy. I know with the right people I could learn how to do anything they can do, and together we could build a great fantasy standalone MUD for Windows. If there is anyone who shares my love of fantasy, and programming this thread will probably be for you. I know I wouldn't have much to contribute to a development team but given time and if someone helped me out, I'd be a valuable asset to the creation and maintenance of this game. I am looking for a few people, even one person but to create a team to fashion a game called Heroes of Saragone. It'll be an epic role playing MUD for Windows that is in a standalone program. Please speak up here if at all interested I would like to get a converation going about all this stuff. I am hell bent determined to make an awesome roleplaying game, I've been wanting to do this forever and I would be willing do anything it takes almost to get this out of my head and onto the internet. Plus having a team of people with the same interest where we could get along and have fun while fashioning a world for our players to have fun in as well. I think it'd be awesome.

Team name: Heroes of Saragone Development Team
Not a company, and not even really existant yet.

Project name:Heroes of Saragone

Brief description:
Production hasn't started yet except for the ideas in my head, it will begin when I have a team and am capable of taking action.

Target aim:
It will be Freeware for the beginning but once we draw in a playerbase I will think about doing special accounts and giving out packages, where the money will go to the maintenance of the game and the development team.

Compensation:
I cannot pay, the only reward I can promise is the delight of the players.

Technology:
So far Visual Basic 6.0, using Client/Server programming. If no one agrees in using VB 6.0 this can change.

Talent needed:
I can use Programmers, People who just generally love fantasy, or just people who would like to help me with questions about programming.

Team structure:
Me..I know a bit about programming and thats it.

Website:
Nothing, yet when I have a team it will be developed.

I may be doing this project in C++ I suppose since it is more universal then Visual Basic 6.0, however I will have to study a little more on C++ for a bit.

You could also do it in VB.NET, which would only require you learn the differences and people can download it for free.

I'm sorry I can't help out though. I'm planning on porting my online RPG from VB6 to C# and will be busy with that.

I might be able to give you some help/direction. (i probably won't be able to be on a team tho....)

As for stand alone client, is it what? Text based? Text with graphics, Tile based graphics, 3d?

Click here to patch the mozilla IDN exploit, or click Here then type in Network.enableidn and set its value to false. Restart the browser for the patches to work.

It would be text based, when I say standalone I mean it would have its own client rather then relying upon Telnet. I don't really require joining the team, if I could just get someone to give me pushes in the right direction that'd work awesome as well.

Ok.

(you don't seem to be online?)

What would the client be like, graphically?

Does it have any graphics? Or is it just like a telnet clone?

Does it just have a few icons (even animated icons), and text underneath?

Or is it fully graphical?

If so, what sort of graphics does it use?

(its questions like this which are needed).

As for server client interaction, i was thinking of something like this.

CMZ param1 Param2 Param3 ect.

So, for eg. if the player was changing rooms to room "RandomRoom2"

CHR Randomroom2

Nothing else is needed.

CHR is parsed out, it then uses "Callbyname" to move data into the function "Changeroom". (with some additional parameters like what player its for, ect.)

Simlarly for things like Look, pickup, shoot, ect.

What range of actions are we talking about here?
What can the player do?

I added you to my buddy list on MSN, hopefully we can talk there. Sounds like I could learn some stuff from you.

We could still use programmers who are efficient in Visual Basic 6.0, and we can use artists for small graphics like a hit point bar, a mana bar, small things like that.

Website is up here

The main server engine is up and running quite well.

We now have players, that can move, talk and have classes. (and attributes which are effected by classes).

We also have a good client, which can connect with the server, and parse out commands. (for eg. change backround colour, play music, print text, ect.).

We are currently looking for two to three people:
One programmer (to help with the server/client coding, adding additional commands, classes, ect. as well as helping with the npc engine).

One artist, to make the very few textures we need (maybe a half-dozen.)

and/or

One musician, to make a couple of good tracks for the client. (nothing fancy, just a little catchy tune and a few effects).

Nice coder
