Im currently developing games under windows API with no DirectX but... I have just learned DirectX and im in the phase of converting my games across. I do however have a problem when it comes to understanding licences! and i want to know if i can just create my software, register under the GNU then start distributing it(for free obviously!) Does the DirectX licence allow me to do this??

I don't believe you'll have any licensing issues with the DirectX redistributable. Although, if you're concerned, just make sure your players know they'll need DirectX.

When you download DirectX there should be those two files:
DirectX SDK EULA.txt
DirectX Redist.txt
Best is to read them. I probably think there should be no problem in distrubuting directx, no matter what license your program underlies because it is free by itself. But should be best to read those. There are probably differences between distributing a program that needs DirectX and a program that contains DirectX.

DirectX may be free, but the source in not offered freely, and GPL requires source. I *think* LGPL allows you to use closed libraries along with your open code, which sounds like what you want.
