Hello, sorry for this newbie question, but i didnt found any useful information in the dx documentation. the antialiasing type used in dx is called multisampling. but does the antialiasing of dx only smooth the edges of polygons or does it also smooth pixel block INSIDE of polygons? thanks

Sampler states smooth you textures:
Device->SetSamplerState(0, D3DSAMP_MAGFILTER, D3DTEXF_ANISOTROPIC);Device->SetSamplerState(0, D3DSAMP_MINFILTER, D3DTEXF_ANISOTROPIC);Device->SetSamplerState(0, D3DSAMP_MIPFILTER, D3DTEXF_LINEAR);

Look up D3DSAMP_MAGFILTER, D3DSAMP_MINFILTER, D3DSAMP_MIPFILTER on MSDN. There is diffrent settings that will provide better results, at preformace cost of course.

I think that Compiler is talking about full scene AA instead of just texture filtering, which doesn't affect the polygon edges.

About AA, some cards just smooth the edges and let the texture filtering handle pixels inside polygons. This creates artefacts when using alpha test for transparency. For example, in HL2 on X800 every polygon edge is really smooth and textures look great with anisotropic filtering, but for example trees which have alpha test transparency have aliasing effect where inside pixels meet the backgroud. GF7800 has a better full-scene AA which solves this problem.

NONMASKABLE AA does only per pixel smoothing ... so it is recommended to use it instead of MULTISAMLPING_2_SAMPLES ... and so on ...

you should have an eye on the old graphicscards which provide slow routines for such a 'simple' AA - method ... i did the same mistake some days ago ... wondering about 6 fps on geforce 2 mx without any draw-calls ;)

Hi,

some articles in this topic:
Multisampling-Antialiasing: A closeup view (the best, without marketing bullshit. There is a german version too if interested.)
Accuview Antaliasing from nvidia. (have a look ath the PDF on the left)
There is some info in the SDK docs too, which you can find under DX Graphics/Tutorials and samples/Samples/Antialias sample, or online.

Hope this will be enough info for you :)
