open source xml parser

You might start with TinyXml. And here is another one (although I don't know much about it). You might also look into boost::spirit.

I've had the best luck with libxml2 at xmlsoft.org

I second that. It's very easy to use and compact. I had previously had to work with Xerces and was not pleased with it at all. The simplicity of libxml2 was a welcome change. =)
