Acting can be a lot of fun, even if it turns out you are really bad at it. Just have fun with it - just that will magnify any skill you have in acting tenfold. Enjoy. =)

any tips for an American trying to do a British accent? I know there are quite a few distinct accents in the area of the UK, do any Brits have any insight as to what kind of accent such characters are likely to have?

I've never seen the play, but from the title it sounds like Received Pronunciation would probably be fitting. Ask the play director to be sure though, it'd be no good if you learned RP only to find that he'd decided to set the play in rural yorkshire just to be different.

Also, post your efforts here so us brits can laugh at you.

Just pretend the title is "No Sex, Please, We're Nerds" and it should feel so natural [wink].

Find a community theater in your area and find their website. They should list their audition schedule and community theater auditions are usually open to anyone. The one that I'll be auditioning for says that you can request a script ahead of time so you can read through it before auditioning. I don't know after that, I think you just show up, I don't think you need to make an appointment.

Well, I think it is more that I need to have my hand held a bit through it. It woudl probably help if I knew someone who was already into it and would give me pointers. I mean, it seems like quite a leap to just jump up and audition like that; chances are it would just suck.

Sign up for a "acting for non-acting majors" type class at a community college or something. Other than that class, I have a lot of public speaking experience (martial arts instructor), as well as a stint on a martial arts demonstration team (stage fighting is boxed awesome). I basically used the class as "credit for me goofing off like a nutjob". I think comedies are going to be much easier for me than dramas.

I've found that a lot of waitresses and bartenders in the area of city theaters fancy themselves actresses, so you might be able to pick one up and learn off of her. Be forwarned, though, they make horrible girlfriends.

Then, just take a shot or two of vodka before going up on the stage.

Had the audition tonight. Don't expect much. It was a lot of fun, though. And I was correct in assuming that there would be a number of cute girls there.
