This is not a typical, I have a game idea, it's gonna be so cool, next big MMORPG... I'm looking for someone with experience writing/planning a client/server game application that will support a few hundred players. I'm not looking to code it all myself, don't plan on it being done anytime soon or even being a hit. What I do want is someone that can talk with me a few hours, and help me break the server and client into parts so I can find people to do the various parts. Basically start in general terms, and then break each part into the required sub parts. No actual code needed, no actual functions written although when planning is complete, it should be pretty close to what final functions should be. Using the client as an example. It's basically these 7 parts: (more or less) 1. initialization 2. utility functions 3. networking 4. graphics 5. sound 6. input 7. output Then refactoring networking down would yield: 1. create socket 2. bind socket 3. send 4. receive 5. error checking 6. building packet 7. extracting packet 8. encrypt packet 9. decrypt packet 10. close socket I figure if I can get this side all planned out and get an idea of all that needs to get done, I can go find the information and people to help if I can decently explain what I'm looking for more precisely. Yes, I know it's rather simple and I've overlooked alot, but have to start at top and refector down to where I can get a start. I'm sure this is a flame target post, but please don't waste my time or forum space with flames. If you can't help me with what I'm looking for then thanks for looking and laughing, then move on and don't post. I would have followed the help wanted format, but this don't really fall in that system. Thanks

While I see your need to put the anti-flame disclaimer, I still see no reason to not flame you.

Sorry bud. Your idea is the same as every single person's in the entire world that likes any MMORPG. While you may have a great game idea, no one in their right mind would help you until you get a prototype up. I won't flame any further, but I couldn't let this post go unreplied to.

Cheers.

I don't believe I mentioned anything about what it's going to be, so I don't see how you can make that judgement.

Also, this is about learning and planning. Trying to figure out how to get from an idea all the way down to the nuts and bolts of it.

You didn't offer and valid feedback, just more of all the negative feedback, so pervasive on this website. Hope you feel better about yourself.

And thanks for the feedback, blaze02...

Its a very unfortunately reality on this board... ANYTHING with MMO mentioned anywhere in the post, even a strictly learning endeavour, will be flamed. Yet someone who has an equally ambitious (see: absurd) idea about the next great single player game will be lauded and praised.

I do wish you good luck with your task/project, and I encourage this sort of mentor relationship your seeking. I've always found its a great way to learn, and an even better way to teach.

I thought I left very valid feedback. Including:
a) don't do an mmo
b) if you are going to do that, make a prototype before asking for help
c) you may have a great game idea, but sadly, it doesn't matter

What if I would have left off the flaming part of my post, and just said:

Your idea is the same as every single person's in the entire world that likes any MMORPG. While you may have a great game idea, no one in their right mind would help you until you get a prototype up.

Would you have really taken such offense? In fact no one has come to help you as much as me (seeings how the only other person to reply just said "good luck").

I wasn't being a dick like you might expect, though I was being a little stern, you just read the post wrong. Besides making a prototype, the other possibilities are:
1) Write a GDD. A game design document will entail every aspect of the gameplay. This will entice people to help you if they think you have a great game idea.
2) Write a TDD. A technical design document will entail every technical side of the game. Most go as deep as class heirarchy and function headers. While you may lack the skills needed to explain everything, it will at least tell you what skills you lack in the making of the game.
3) Get an internship at a company making an MMO. I'm not sure how many companies are making an MMO or how many are hiring.
4) Go to school. If you have the money, time, lack of social life, you could attend school full time and learn enough to make a full scale MMO. Although, you still couldn't make one by yourself, you will be able to fill in more of the pieces of the game.

If you are really looking at making an MMO, you will want to consider the above steps.

I could end the post there and make everybody happy (except myself), but that is not how I am. I will give the truth to anybody and everybody that asks, no matter how bad it makes me look, how bad it makes them look, or apparently, how low my forum rating goes.
The truth is that I still believe my first post. You should cease and desist any idea of making an MMO. At least scale it down to a massively single-player not-online rpg. I wouldn't even suggest making an rpg. How about a massively 1-player action game or a 1-player action game.

The way I read it, he doesn't want to make an MMO, he'd like someone who has a better idea how to make one teach him some aspects of it. I think this is more valid than him deciding "I'm going to try to make an MMO myself, and obviously fail, but learn in an entirely inefficient manner."

If you had actually read his first post, you would have seen that he isn't looking for people to join his team for the next great mmog out there. He is asking for someone that has experience making that sort of game to take a couple hours out of his life and pass along a little of his knowledge. If you are going to give people the "truth" at least make sure it is even relevant to that person. If anything this guy has shown more down to earth thinking at the start of a project of this sort then most teams, and surely more then the teams that fail. So, I suggest you keep your truth to yourself next time...

Blaze, whilst your post were valid in the normal situation, they aren't at all valid here. Nowhere in the original post does the topic starter say that they are going to make an MMORPG. They are merely looking for someone who has knowledge of coding something like an MMORPG server to take a couple of hours to talk about it, and discuss various theories and the like.

He put an "anti-flame disclaimer"(your words) because many people see "MMORPG" in a post and start getting into flame mode. I really don't think that he needed to even mention flaming, because anyone who reads the post properly and completely would realise that there is no need to flame whatsoever.

I'm happy for this one to not have the template.

*Ahem*

The OP sounds quite reasonable really:
- No unreasonable expectation for completion time
- No unreasonable expectation of producing the next hit game
- Has actually read the *** READ BEFORE POSTING *** thread
- Is working towards a pretty detailed plan of what (s)he wants to do

An MMO is doable (Eternal Lands, RuneScape, Infinity (in production)), it's just a very complex project and must be approached with a lot of commitment and the understanding that it will be very difficult. In this case the OP appears to be quite sensible.

I think there's been enough discussion of whether or not this is a good idea, and I certainly don't want to see any further flames. Feel free to post if you can recommend some good resources or help to the OP though.

Norfic:
If you're unable to find someone to help you out in this way, perhaps you could try creating a post on the topic in our Multiplay and Network Programming Forum (although they'll probably expect you to have an attempt at fleshing something out yourself before they help out).

Good luck with it. [smile]
