http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060604/ap_on_fe_st/party_in_hell HELL, Mich. - 'They're planning a hot time in Hell on Tuesday. The day bears the date of 6-6-06, or abbreviated as 666 — a number that carries hellish significance. And there's not a snowball's chance in Hell that the day will go unnoticed in the unincorporated hamlet 60 miles west of Detroit. Nobody is more fired up than John Colone, the town's self-styled mayor and owner of a souvenir shop. "I've got `666' T-shirts and mugs. I'm only ordering 666 (of the items) so once they're gone, that's it," said Colone, also known as Odum Plenty. "Everyone who comes will get a letter of authenticity saying you've celebrated June 6, 2006, in Hell." Most of Colone's wares will sell for $6.66, including deeds to one square inch of Hell. Live entertainment and a costume contest are planned. The Gates of Hell should be installed at a children's play area in time for the festivities. "They're 8 feet tall and 5 foot wide and each gate looks like flames, and when they're closed, it's a devil's head," Colone told The Detroit News for a Saturday story. Mike "Smitty" Hickey, owner of the Dam Site Inn, wasn't sure what kind of clientele would show up Tuesday. "We're all about having fun here. I don't think we're going to get the cult crowd, the devil worshippers or anything like that," said Hickey, whose bar's signature concoction is the Bloody Devil, a variant of the Bloody Mary. Colone, meanwhile, has been in touch with radio stations as far away as San Diego and Seattle that are raffling off trips to Hell in honor of 6-6-6. The 666 revelry is just the latest chapter in the town's storied history of publicity stunts, said Jason LeTeff, one of its 72 year-round residents — or, as the mayor calls them, Hellions or Hell-billies. But LeTeff wasn't particularly enthused. "Now, here I am living in Hell, taking my kids to church and trying to teach them the right things and the town where we live is having a 6-6-6 party," he said. According to the town's semiofficial Web site, there are two leading theories about how Hell got its name. The first holds that a pair of German travelers stepped out of a stagecoach one sunny afternoon in the 1830s, and one said to the other, "So schoene hell" — roughly translated as, "So bright and beautiful." Their comments were overheard by some locals and the name stuck. The second holds that George Reeves was asked after Michigan gained statehood what he thought the town he helped settle should be called, and reportedly replied, "I don't care, you can name it Hell if you want to." The name became official on Oct. 13, 1841.' ...Dumbasses, all of them.

This reminds me of the time two seconds ago when I read that thread about some weirdos with too much spare time did something that proved I'm actually pretty normal.

Why? Because you believe in some so called 'God'?

Not much different then people getting drunk for a week in New Orleans or people trying to shoot each other with bottle rockets on July 4th.

Its a good thing to do something different and piss of the bible bangers every once in awhile. If it was closer and I didn't have to work I would go up there. Though somebody should tell them that 666 isn't the mark of the beast anymore.

Yes. I remember saying I believed in God multiple times. I love God... and Jesus too. They are my friends. 'DooDooDooDoo doo doo doo, do doo. Jesus is Just alright with me' lt is because of the fact that me and God are so tight that it seemed natural for me to defend God's honor by chastizing Satan worshippers everywhere who are willing to celebrate this day.

Actually NOT. This has nothing to do with intolerance for the Church and I could care less if the morons find it funny (or actually intend) to piss off the church by celebrating 6/6/06.

One of the reasons I think this is a funny/idiotic story: "According to the town's semiofficial Web site, there are two leading theories about how Hell got its name.

So you know, the town that was named 'hell' was done so merely because of an misinterpretation, otherwise known as an incredible act of stupidity.

And that of course makes everyone residing in Hell 'Dumbasses, all of them'.

Ya know...I have to admit I was wrong. I meant only 66.6 percent of them are dumbasses.

I don't see how this pisses off a church.

It's a joke. They don't worship Satan in any way. They are just having fun with the name of the town. It's like Halloween.. but all year round.

Some people might say that pissing people off purely for the sake of pissing them off makes you the dumbass.

Actually, Halloween pissed off a bunch of bible-belters last year. The local hyperconservative (four dimensions of bullshit!) press picked up the ball and ran with it, getting about as far as the editorial page with their mock outrage before watching their readership drop by ten thousand a month.

It was either that, or the editorial later that was bashing a private museum display for being too gory and traumatizing our darling children while simultaneously lauding the Passion of the Christ. *shrug*

I think here is the real Hell.

Wouldn't it be abbreviated as 6606?

Or how about the fact that some versions of the manuscripts say 616?

Or how about the fact that we really have no idea what this "Beast" thing is or why it has a number?

The number of the Beast?

Does this mean Kelsey Grammer is evil?

That hairstyle surely is.

He mysteriously survived a car crash in 1996 that should have killed him.

His father was murdered. His sister was raped, then murdered. Two of his brothers mysteriously died in a "scuba diving accident".

He played a Demon on "Medium" a few months back.

Anti-christ?

Bullshit, or not? You be the judge...

Hardly.

Even with your specious explanation of deriding the origins of the name of the town/hamlet, let's look at the origins of the names of a few other towns:
  • The Bronx in New York City was named after Johann van der Bronck. The entire county used to be his private garden.

  • Chicago is named after the Potawatomi term, Checagou, which translated as wild onion or garlic, but is also considered a translation for strong, referring to the pungent odor that signified the town during its railroad construction days.

  • Overland Park is a meaningless, generic name (the city only having been officially incorporated in 1960) for a subdivision plot of land along a military highway. Small wonder that's where our friend Rain 7 is from.

Aye.

We have a Hamlet here (about 15 miles from Buffalo, NY) called "The Hamlet of Townline". It was named after the road that runs through it, "Townline", which runs... between two towns, Alden (where I live) and Lancaster.

Stupid little place; it's a speed trap (it is suddenly 35mph in the middle of a huge 55mph road, no signs tell you that until you get there, and the cops love pulling you over), and the whole place is basically the intersection of Broadway (US Rt 20) and Townline Road.

And the best part about this tiny place:

In 1861, they seceeded from the Union and officially supported the south in the Civil war. They sent a whole 5 troops south to fight for the Confederates. And the Hamlet forgot to rejoin the Union when the war was over. This fact wasn't discovered until 1945, at which point they decided to rejoin the USA, the last of the confederate territories to re-join.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My signature is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My signature, without me, is useless. Without my signature, I am useless.

Okayyyyy...Just to clarify. I don't actually believe EVERYONE in the town of HELL is a dumbass. I don't know anyone from the town nor can I claim to have any statistical knowledge that substantiates my claim that either 66.6 percent of the population or 100 percent of the population can be thrown into the genus of 'DumbAss'.

Neither of those examples in any way (in terms of concentration or quality) equals the stupidity of the naming of Hell, not even close.

  • Your reasoning is just as flawed as my own, with the small exception that I was joking in the first place. To be perfectly fair, questioning the amount of intelligence (of lack thereof) in a town of 72 residents (who have a very high probability of being rednecks, besides living close to Detroit :p and may I mention, choose to live in a town called 'HELL' which regardless of religious origin, is a negative connotation in many different cultures) along with a mayor who is gungho about selling little tracts of land for 6.66 and promoting 'Hell' as a viable tourist attraction seems a bit more feasible than questioning the intelligence of a city (Overland Park) where the population is in the tens of thousands and the average medium income is $100,000 +, regardless of the fact of when it was established. Besides, I am failing to see the logic behind questioning the intelligence of a city based upon WHEN it was established. What does that have to do with anything? What you perceived as a stupid initial statement on my part doesn't necessarily mean you have to retort with a stupid statement as well.
