Team name: None at the moment. This will be decided once there is a team. Project name: The Skeleton Garden (working title) Brief description: I am planning on this game being an Episodic First Person Adventure. What the hell does that mean? Well, I want to take the episodic idea from Valve’s newly released SiN Episodes and Half-Life 2 Episodes and create a more story oriented episodic game. I want it to be first person because I want the player to have a very interactive and involving experience, which, I feel the first person perspective provides the best. The game will also have some horror elements as I want there to be some moments of high tension and “Oh my God!” moments. So, to break the game down it is: The episodic elements of SiN Episodes + The first person interactivity of games like Deus Ex + The compelling story telling and real world enviroment like Indigo Prophecy and Shenmue + The creepiness of Silent Hill = This Game Target aim: After we get a playable demo ready I would like to pitch the game to publishers but I am also willing to release the game independantly. Compensation: There is no payment at the moment but if we eventually did get a publishing deal or start selling the game ourselves the entire team would obviously receive part of the money earned. Technology: Yet to be decided. Talent needed: Mainly programmers and artists of all kinds (concept, level designers, 3D modelers). I’d like to get at least one experienced programmer and one experienced 3D artist/level designer to be the lead programmer and lead artist respectively. Team structure: Alex Riggen (myself) – Game designer/writer/composer Website: None yet but I do plan on creating one as soon as the game gets into development. Contacts: alex@farfromwords.com – please put Help Wanted in the Subject line Feedback: Anything

I realized that my previous post didn’t explain too much of the story/gameplay of the game so without further ado I will explain it to you. The main character, Ann, (the one whom you control) is a 19-20 year old girl who was raised by her extremely religious grandmother along with her younger brother (age 12) who is blind. She still lives with her grandmother and brother as she does not want to leave her brother alone with her grandmother and she does not make near enough money on her own. What does she do to make money? She’s a waiter and yes I plan on having the waiting on tables being a playable part of the game. Actually, I plan on having everything being playable because I don’t want there to be any cutscenes at all in the game. Very similar to how the recent King Kong game worked where you were almost always in control of your character. Anyway let’s get back to the story why don’t we. You see Ann’s next door neighbor is a frail old man who always watches Ann from various windows in his house. He’s rarely seen outside of his home and Ann has never talked to him nor seen anyone else talk to him. Early in the game Ann will notice that she doesn’t see the old man watching her anymore and a few days later she will discover that he died in his home and no one has found out about it yet. Unexpectedly Ann receives the strange news that the old man has left everything he owns to her in his will, and it becomes Ann’s responsibility to go through the man’s home and belongings. That’s when she discovers this amazing garden back behind his house that she never knew existed. At first it’s an incredibly beautiful sight until Ann discovers a strange humanlike creature that the old man had been keeping in a glass cage. Ann accidentally lets it escape and the rest of the game involves Ann’s quest to discover what it is and put an end to the random killing it starts to inflict upon the citizens of Ann’s hometown.

The gameplay of the game will be very open ended. There will be a cycle of day and night and almost any item can be interacted with. Ann will have access to a digital camera that you can use to take a picture of anything you want and even change photo frames in your home to pictures you’ve taken. You will be able to get on a computer, use the phone, watch TV, turn off and on lights, walk around the town, talk to anyone, and so on. You will not be able to do anything that Ann wouldn’t do herself for example stealing random things, beating up random people, and so on. This is not the Elder Scrolls where you are creating your own unique character you are seeing the game from Ann’s eyes and helping make decisions she would make. The game will be divided into episodes which each take place over the period of one week in the game. Also, the first episode could just include a small portion of the town and with each new episode the game world would be expanded to fit the story.

Hopefully this post helps explain what this game is for everyone. This is just a brief synopsis of what the game is and I’ll explain things in much more detail to anyone who is interested in helping with the game.

Thanks!

Could I have an email address to contact you at? I rarely use AIM and an email address would work best at the moment.

GAMES ARE LIFE!! Programming is the best.. Put the 2 together.. You get a kick ass job. The people behind the game are the true rulers.

It is an interesting idea not having any cutscenes. I've never seen this approach before, and perhaps it will work. I do have my doubts though. Still, I believe firmly that ANY idea with real work and heart put into it can be excellent. Sounds pretty good to me. Now I just await concept art, so I can turn it into game assets.

I believe Half-Life does not have any cutscenes actually, and I'm sure there are others. I do agree that not having any cutscenes will probably make some moments in the game a little harder to create but I also believe that the game will be a lot more involving if you are always in control of your character.

I had not considered Half Life...now that you mention it, I guess there were none. I guess that the biggest thing is trapping the player at certain points, so that they focus on the action. Maybe pausing them so that they watch actions happen (i.e. when the headcrab trapped Mr. Freeman in the transporter at the beginning of HL2). With a real example of it working, I suppose that it has greater potential than I first thought. I'm not writing the story also, so I guess the biggest thing is that I am very inquisitive about how it will work. Maybe apprehensive is the word. I dunno. Still, I can't wait to get to work!

A little update on the building of the team so far. We have two programmers one being the possible lead programmer. Two 3D artists, a concept artist and myself. What I'm mainly looking for now is texture artists, level designers, and 3D animators. I am also still looking for someone who is interested and has the experience necessary to be the lead artist.

Thanks for all who have contacted me so far and I look forward to making this game the best it can be.
