After 6+ months of searching - I can now officially say that I am in Major Debt! But at least I have some place to rest my head at night. Finally bought a condo - 2 bedroom/2 bath for 165,000 in Central Massachusetts. The mortgage is a little bit higher than I wanted, but it's the small stuff that's killing me right now! House inspection - $280 Lawyer for Purchase and Sale Agreement: $250 Offer security: $500. Closing costs: $2700. Plus I'm sure that there will be other little items along the way that will cost me a few hundred here or there. Overall though - it's worth it. Been saving for over 5 years (even when in Grad School) for this moment - and now I just have to hope that the housing market doesn't take a major dive in the next 5-10 years. Roach

That is a remarkably cheap condo. You should see what they are going for here.

That's cheap man. Even Condos in MISSOURI sell for higher than that. Even with the same amount of space.

Jesus, that has two bedrooms. Fuck this, I am moving to Massachusetts.

You pay more than that for a one bedroom, one bathroom here. Hell, you pay more than that for a university dorm room!

And my parents sold, (on the highside) their 5 bed, 2 bath, 2story+yet to be finished basement for around $200k cnd. Oh yeah, and that was on a near acre too.

My familys' 2 bedroom/2 bathroom condo in Masachusetts was ~280k! I'm being ripped off >_<

You'd be hard pressed to find a one bed flat for less than double that around here; and if you did it's probably because it's a mess and you'll end up spending the difference just to make it habitable.

Too right. We rent a two-bed one-bath little terrace that is worth about £120,000. This is apparently $218,520.78. And this is right out in the wilds of England. You'd pay at least double if not quadruple that in London.

Man, the house I'm living in at the moment is a two up two down mid terraced house, 25 minute walk from town, and that's worth about £250k (so ~$450k). I want cheap housing [sad].

I've been looking into houses and condos in the Iowa area and condos that size, unless they are really upscale (gated community etc), go for around $100,000 to $140,000

I just got an excellent idea! Buy some property in the US, and sell it in the UK! Buckets of profit! Now if I can only figure out how to ship it across the Atlantic... [grin]

The utility closets in the condos around here (South Florida) go for more than your entire condo. It is perfectly normal for condos to go for 500,000-1,000,000 or more depending on their location. The market here is out of wack. Congratulations on being a property owner though.

Ok, lets stop beating around the unimportant stuff. How big is the fiber line running into this house?

The condo originally listed for near 200k back in October, but because of the market slowing down - it fell almost 40k. (The owners bought it for less than 75k over 5 years ago - so they still made a good chunk of cash off of it!).

I'm out in Central Mass so prices arn't that crazy, but out near Boston - Prices for the same condo would have been about 400-500k easially. I wanted to buy something that I knew that I could afford on my part time work schedule as a software engineer (I'm also trying to start my own video business on the side) - so I went conservative on the price of the condo. I was pre-approved for over 500k - but I knew I couldn't afford that and eat at the same time :).

Intrest rates are now in the 7% area - no more 5%s anymore - so that affected my decision as well to buy low :(

Thanks for the congrads. Its a really nice area, with a pool - Tennis and B-Ball courts in a nice wooded area in a suburbian town.

Will eventually post some photos - house inspection is this weekend.

Large barges, with sails. buy cheap land somewhere along the coast, get a few diggers, fill the barges, and send them over seas.

I've often thought of the idea of getting some old barges, and converting them into large houseboats. A big stable, ocean going barge could make a really nice space to build a house, once you got it cleaned up.

No need to buy land, and as long as you keep moving to a city with a nice waterfront area, you don't even have to sell your house!

For some real estate hilarity you guys should look at the Marin PoS blog. There are some great homes in there.

Congrats, man.

I really wonder what I'll do with my mothers house (if she doesn't sell it, that is) when I inherit it. It's really big (3 stories, 100m² each, pool, garden), and there's no family and no offspring in sight for me :(

My grandmother also owns a flat in a very expensive part of Munich, and a really luxurious casa in Spain. Plans of my mom and uncle are to sell all this, which, admittedly, stinks. I'd love to live in this place when I retire (in, like, 40 years).
