not sure if this is appropiate for this forum but.. i'm thinking about making a mud while taking a break from my main project. what kind of things would you like to see in a mud, particularly things that either haven't been done, or things that haven't been done very much. I made a mud in java that was multithreaded, but I gave up trying to implement AI NPCs because I didn't feel like working very hard on it.

I had it to the point where I could kill bossk and then beat him to death with his own corpse when he showed up again, though.

So many people wanting to make a mud. Maybe we should tem up for a "noobies mud group" project?
Click here to patch the mozilla IDN exploit, or click Here then type in Network.enableidn and set its value to false. Restart the browser for the patches to work.

One of the coolest mud games that I saw was a Dragonball Z one that always seemed to be down. Fighting was done in real time and based on timing. So the monster would go "Sweep kick..." and like 1.5 seconds later you had to type "Jump" within like .25 seconds of the finish or "Tech low" within like .1 seconds. If you dodged the attack, it gave you the opportunity to attack, if you tech blocked it, they would be stunned. I would like to see another mud with a system like that.

That sounds like a bad idea for laggy connections!

And slow typists.

That was the biggest downfall of the game. However, that was back when broadband was for colleges and 56k was just starting to become standard (I was still on a 28k). With almost everyone on broadband now it should totally alleviate the problem. Keep in mind this is a text game so bandwidth is very low.

Typing also wasn't really an issue because you could bind the words into a key if you were slow.

It really was a cool game. The best part was that theoretically a guy with a powerlevel of 100 could beat a guy with a powerlevel of 10,000,000. You just had to dodge everything perfectly. It also made some really interesting battles, you would fake a high punch so they would block high, then switch to a low attack, or repeat a same attack so they would dodge it early. You could also fly off the ground to dodge and then come in with a ranged attack, or fly out of the room and charge in and attack when they were off guard. Like I said, one of the coolest MUDs i've ever played.

I'd like to see a MUD with some kind of clever organization of text to make it abundantly clear when people are in the same room as you. I start to go cross-eyed after a while, trying to keep track of where everyone is based on just the " is here" line at the bottom of the room description

That's pretty standard in most of today's muds. Ansi Coloring, Exits as a flag, and People and items in at the very bottom with spacing (in a different color).

I actually had an idea for a MUD with an XML output filter; that way you could just interpret it with many families of MUD clients that would support the schema (and display the information graphically with avatars and a map, for example, or in an IRC style with a "members list" on the side).

It's probably a worthwhile little hobbyist project for someone who likes XML.
