Just thought I'd share this find. They are called FESI, and Rhino, and are a sets of Java packages for embedding an ECMAScript or &#106avascript interpreter into your applications. I like this because I do a lot of Web development in Java and &#106avascript, so the more I can bastardize one with the other, the better I feel about my lot in life. Haven't actually got to use them yet. Just wanted to drop it in here and see if anyone has heard of it. Will probably send it to my boss as well.

You know Rhino is an offical part of the JDK/JRE in Java SE 6? It appears that you're not the only one that likes it.

These support 1.4 and down however, thats a big plus. Mac OSx users for example (as far as I know) are stuck on a customised version of the 1.4 JRE, the JRE is updgraded along with the OS so a lot of people are still using 1.4.

You're right, a lot of people are stil using Java 1.4, but for your information some points about Java on a Mac OS X:

Running Mac OS X 10.4.6 (Tiger), Java 5.0 is the default. This means applets and applications are by default launched with the Java 5.0 JRE. However, previous version of Mac OS X either don't have Java 5.0 or it is not the default (but can for example requested by Java Webstart or from an Applciations Bundle).

Btw. there from the Apple Developer Connection site, you can also download Java SE 6.0 Previews. The latest Apple one is based on the weekly Mustang build 88, which is 6 weeks behind the latest from SUN. Not too bad IMHO :-)

When Java SE 6.0 Final is released by Apple, it will be installed vie auto-update on Mac OS X 10.4.6, but Java 5.0 probably remains the default. At least this is true for the developer preview, but they bundled a nice dialog where you can change the default. Of course you cannot assume user to do this, but again you can you request Java 6 via Webstart. Even better would be a distribution as an Application Bundle, which includes a stub-file, that determines the JRE to be launched.
