I just watched Carmack's QuakeCon 2006 keynote speech, and it was pretty damn interesting. It's long, and the file's huge, but if you've got an hour and twenty minutes and 300MB of bandwidth to consume, I'd suggest taking a look.

I downloaded it a few days ago, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Noo, why couldn't it last another hour?! [sad]

op++;

Is there a site where I can find mass amounts of technical videos like this? I love watching these things.

Yeah nothing finer than John Carmack or Will Wright spewing a stream-of-consciousness at you while you surf the web or do a little development. There's no need to watch this movie, just listen to it - I felt sad when it ended too, strange.

Yeah, I actually had a bunch of boxes of old stuff I had to sort through so I did that while it was on. It was nice having the video, though.

And I too was like "Nooooo!" when it ended. I'm going to have to do some searching and find more of these. If you wiki him there's a link to his developer's blog and it's pretty much the same thing as the keynote address: John rambling about whatever interests him, which of course tends to interest others. They're old, I think the newest one is from 2003 and it's about the NV30 vs the R300, but it's still pretty interesting.

Actually, he's made some blog entries over at armadilloaerospace since then: http://www.armadilloaerospace.com/n.x/johnc/Recent%20Updates/Archive

That was... hypnotic. If anyone finds more things like this, please post them.

I wonder if John will change his tune regarding using CPU cores in place of GPU's once Intel reaches the 32 core cpu they are shooting for by 2010 (I seriously doubt Intel will actually come anywhere close to 32 cores in that timeframe though, but just assuming they do). I sorta like the idea of dedicating 16 or more cores for graphics. Even if the added flexibility of an extra single core may not provide enough of a return to benefit graphics, surely 16 could provide something worth while, even if their flexibility isn't fully utilized.

How come whenever Carmack's name is mentioned, somewhere a programmer gets a chubbie...

Why? WHY I ASK YOU!??!

I'm listening to the talk now, and it's quite interesting. I converted it to MP3 and OGG to take around with me and I put up the OGG version on my server. It's a little more friendly for people on dialup or people that just want the audio at 46 MB.

Is there a transcript? It's easier to read his speech than listen to it.

Generally it helps when you're insulting someone's intelligence or perceptive abilities to spell your insult correcting [wink]

Sure it can provide something - a new niche for third party libraries that will likely cost tons of money. Are you really interested in writing a 16-threaded full-featured rasterizer? Sure, it might be a fun and educational project, but if you work on something like that, you're not likely to get very far on your game for a decade or ten.

Rain 7: He is a skilled and talented programmer that has a knack for turning graphics theory into realtime effects. There are those I like more for various reasons (more optimized engines and more stylistic games that make FAR better use of the limited technology they provide), but you gotta give the man (and the id team) credit for pushing technology as far as they have (even if it doesn't make for great games that run well on the mid-level hardware of the time).

'Twas an intentional misspelling intended to push my pseudo-insult into the realm of irony. Much the same as exclamations can!!!!1111onetyoneone

Only not so overdone.

I read all his blog posts after reading this thread. They are immensely entertaining. I will download the audio thingy and listen to his speech just as soon as I have that much space available on my hard drive.

EDIT: The irony itself is also fairly subtle. I'm not saying that he's NOT a moron (that would be sarcasm, not irony), but am instead lampooning the idea that I, through reading another person's single net-post, can ascertain their level of intelligence, significantly impact them with a Net-delivered one-liner, and make the world a better place for Smart People Like Me (note a second instance of irony, this time far less subtle). Thank you for your insightful repudiation of my typing, though. Please note, in the future, that the 'a' and 'o' keys are on TOTALLY opposite sides of the keyboard. Well, unless you have a Dvorak setup, which, sadly, I do not. :)

Has anyone noticed that Carmack squeeks? Every once and a while he makes a sound like the begining of a laugh, but is cut very short. Very sterotypical treky like.
