Router problem ?

Hi everyone :) I'm afraid my questions here won't seem very programming-related, these are much more newbie questions about routers in general... I DID browse the faq but I didn't really find the answer. I'm currently developping a multiplayer game. I haven't got a lot of experience about networks myself, so maybe you'll think my attempt is in very good position to fail... yet I managed to write some simple server code using winsock (TCP), and it seems to work for now, when I try them with telnet 127.0.0.1 from my own computer. So I gave this server code I made to a friend of mine. He launched the application from his home, and I used telnet again in the same way, with his ip address this time, on the same port, and it worked, i.e. his results were the same I got when testing alone : connection was accepted and he was receiving my sends. Then... we tried the other way. I launched from home and waited for his telnet to connect. But no connection ever occured. I'm connected to the internet with a special modem (the "C-Box") of my FAI (cegetel in France) which, as far as I know, works pretty much as a router. It has an IP address and my PC has a LAN adress (or so I guess, as I said I'm not very clear about it). The IP my friend used with telnet is the "public IP" provided by my C-Box, which is the same as the one I get with www.whatismyip.com, and the same again that the one my friend read out of my connection when I connected to him. I tried to manually disable the winxp firewall for the port I use when I create the socket used to listen() in my server code... still, my friend never could connect to me... while I connected to him perfectly. Could anyone have a solution to this ? :) (If not, even an explanation would be very much appreciated :D) best regards, - TiPiou - [Edited by - TiPiou on August 15, 2006 6:02:03 PM]

Sounds like you need to set up port forwarding for your servers com ports.

Thanks for your answer DogCity.

actually, I had figured that out in the meantime, and unfortunately I did that already, with no great success... Thanks for the link though, I checked if I did thoses steps correctly on the pages you provided...
well... er... seems so

Whether or not I did everything correctly is another story, though.

Another test I did was to use the IP of my computer in the local network, and that succeeded.

Some info that may be useful (or not) : When I activate "Skygate firewall", next I telnet the public IP of my C-Box from my own computer, then Skygate IS notified of the connection try, and asks me if I want to allow it...
Now what gets me a little bit confused, is that I get the notification when trying to telnet on the port I expressely opened and forwarded in the C-Box, AND when trying to telnet the other ports alike...

In every way, my server code doesn't receive any connection request as soon as my public IP is involved.

well... as you can see I'm a little lost :p

thanks anyway ;)
