[java] Multiplayer Applet Game Architecture

I have not written much Java in about four years when I did a simple RPG in Java. Anyway, I am looking to write a simple, multi-user client/server application. I think that delivering the client in Applet form would be especially desirable but I do not fully understand the architecture of such a system. Particularly, I seem to recall there being issues concerning applets connecting to outside servers. How exactly do games like Runescape work in this respect? Does the applet connect to the same server that served it and forwarded or similar? Am I completely mistaken?

that's it for security reason usually you want the server running on the same machine where your applet is served.

I guess you could also sign your jar but I'm not sure.

Ok, that is what I figured. While an applet as a delivery method is very enticing, that in particular is rather restrictive. I will investigate further.

Thanks!

Hey,

do you really need an applet? Because if not I would consider using WebStart and making a "real" application.

Glad I could help.

Andrew, the creator of Runescape, got his applet to work by signing it with a "key" that is recognized by the online community. Whenever a new user loads his applet, they get a message window asking them if they would like to trust Jagex.

So sign your applet with a trusted key. Easier said than done. I don't know how to do it; but that's what you want to be researching.

I do not need to use an Applet but I feel that despite its flaws, it is an interesting delivery method as I had mentioned above. If I were to develop a real client, so to speak, then I would probably write it in C++/Python just because of my familiarity with them versus Java.

Ok, I am familiar with this process though I only needed it for utilizing local system resources. I was not aware that it allowed you to connect to external servers. Thanks for the tip!
