Coming from a guy named after the creepiest kind of porn in the world and who has a zero rating, that doesn't exactly make me feel good about what I just said.

Honestly, what does it matter? The world of elementary and secondary education is governed by arbitrary rules and regulations that keeps everyone "safe" and "learning." These rules also keep problems hidden and otherwise good ideas stoed away and forgotten. I will give you some examples:

My former high school from which I graduated switched to block scheduleing several years before because "studies say it was better for students." For my senior year it changed again because "studies say you should be in each class for the same amount of time every week." ~80% of students and ~70% of teachers did not want to change as the results of a polling conculded. It did not matter. Now every honors class and upper level class is screwed because the lesson plans were made for 90 minute classes. This decision was made to please the Parents association and the school board, that simple, to show they were "working" to improve our school.

Another larger example. The state of Missouri often touts that our state averages above national averages on the ACT and SAT test. This is a good thing right? Wrong. We only average so high because only about 16% of students take the exam.

I have saved the bexst for last. No child left behind act. Do I need to say more? Ok, maybe I do. Did a single teacher at my high school support the NCLBA? No. Infact they opose it 100% with anyone. Why? Because it does not supply funds, because the students it needs to help does not it does not help, or at least at my high school.

When will they ever learn? Never because two principles govern politics: 1) they are never wrong and 2) they cannot leave well enough alone.

I don't know much about the Australian school system (practically nothing), but I'll guess that the HSC is, to some extent, an all or nothing affair (at least to the extent that our high school diploma/transcript is) and that your school is within their rights to fail you your HSC if you don't complete their requirements to their satisfaction. It sounds like there was every indication you weren't going to complete one of their requirements. Under my assumptions, this means there was every indication you were going to fail your HSC.

Now, I'm not sure what your complaint is. Which is your complaint?
1) That they warned you about this situation
2) That they took precautions to make sure the warning got through
3) That they took precautions to make sure your parents knew

If (1), then I'll say I'm usually grateful for a warning. These past two months I was past due on my electric bill because I hadn't received a bill. Instead of turning off my power without warning, they sent warnings. (Turns out they had incorrectly entered my address in their systems.) If you aren't fulfilling your job requirements, your employer is within their rights to fire you, but most would consider it polite to give you a chance to reform before simply laying you off. Warnings, to me, seem to be common curteousy and have helped me in the past.

If (2), then I'll ask what good is a warning that isn't delivered? I'm not annoyed when someone calls and asks if I received a package they sent, just to be sure it's through.

If (3), then are you still a minor? I think parents should take more responsibility in raising their children and this sounds like information that would be useful to that purpose. Are your parents assisting you in paying for your education? Then they have a right to know how their money is being spent.

Or, in short, I don't see the problem with how your school acted in this case; I don't think this was an instance of the "deeper issue" you're getting at, although I can perhaps see how it brought the deeper issue to mind.

As for the deeper issue, I think people need to take more responsibility for their actions (so, yes, I'll be that someone and say it's your problem if you don't get your assignments in on time) and stop blaming other people for their own accidents and mistakes. On the other hand, there are situations where steps should be painted yellow for visibility, etc.

EDIT: Sorry, really didn't need to quote the entire OP...

The zero rating is thanks to some friendly GDnet posters such as yourself. And it's more art than it is porn, IMO.

Its explicit purpose is sexual arousal, that makes it porn. Also, your zero rating is more thanks to your post history than anything else.

Being the first Australian to reply to you (assumptions for Lolicon), from Victoria, having done my VCE (equivalent of HSC) two years ago (I'm now in university), with a (single) compulsory religion subject (I went to an Anglican school: Trinity Grammar School, Kew), in year 10, I can say:

Chill out man. No teachers care about anyting except their own subject. Especially in VCE - they'll bend over backwards to accomodate your requests, because not only do they want the best averages out of all the teachers, they, shock horror, actually like to see the kids who try, succeed. Yes, the letter to your parents is way over anything I've ever heard (and yes, American readers, it'd be a private school, so not part of our government-secular schooling). But still, you did go to a catholic school. Do you know the Melbourne school Scotch? No? Well, they (the boys/staff/whomever) must address the crowd in descending order; not in order of teachers/staff, but in clergy order first, followed by staff.

The point is: The reason people don't take a Year 12 certificate seriously is because schools somewhat coddle people. Universities don't, period. Universities, do not. They just don't. You don't hand something in, you get a late deduction of 10% for each day - after five days, you fail outright (and that's the most lenient algorithm). That's why degrees are so required these days.

Also, your analogy to stairs makes little to no sense.

We had something like this a my Catholic High School. Instead of having a full religion class for our last year, we had "Religion Days". We only had four of them and they were only worth 1/3 of a credit. We'd spend the entire day listening to speakers and watching videos. Some were interesting, others were weak attempts at indoctrination. By the next week, we'd have to submit a report on what we learned, which had to be decidedly pro religion day. If you failed to submit a report that the teacher liked, you'd fail. If you failed, you could still graduate, but you couldn't go to Grad night (Prom). Of course a lot of kids skipped the entire day altogether, so there was a bit of an uproar when they announced this before the last religion day. Some people wrote a make up essay. Then we had a lot of guys taking other guys as dates. They weren't openly gay, so nobody made a stink.
