Hey All, I'm fairly new to this forum and am very new to game programming. I've always loved the thought of working on a game and have spent a bit of time fiddling around with C++ and OpenGL. Since joining the forum, I've been pondering the idea of the possibility of getting a team of people from the forum together to work on a game. Obviously, no one person can create a decent game, games take large teams of people. With the massive amount of talent I see from the members in the forum and the huge variety of talent I can't see why this wouldn't be feasible. What do you think? I'm new to this so tell me if its a stupid idea or it just wouldnt work. I personally am quite experienced in 3D modelling and creating and applying textures. I'm happy to create maps and models. I'm sure there are other people on here experienced in physics, animation, sound, game design and programming. Think about it, if you are interested in getting into game development seriously, how much more advantage would you have if you had a working game to show your experience rather than some demos. If people think this can work and would be interested and are willing to put in the time and effort please let me know! Thanks Benen

You're not the first person to think of this idea in one form another - just visit the Help Wanted forums and you'll see that :) Also, if you're serious about putting a team of any sort together, that's where you should post (just be sure to follow the template!).

There may be a bit of a reality check involved though, in that putting together a team may be more difficult than you think, some reasons for which are:

1. There are many, many projects and teams vying for attention, and the more talented or experienced developers, if they join a project at all, will most likely be more interested in those that meet certain criteria and have something concrete to show.

2. Many if not most of the more experienced folks here are already busy either working on their own projects or on a team project with other experienced developers.

If you're interested in doing this, by all means head over to Help Wanted. Just be aware that there's a lot of competition there, and attracting interest in a start-up project is not easy.

At the turn of the twenty-first century, Introversion Software would have said the same [wink].

Perhaps you should reflect on what you wrote before throwing your toys out of the pram.

benen, if you happen to check this thread again, if you're at all serious about game development you should really reconsider your position. You're unlikely likely to find a forum that is more 'friendly' than gdnet while still being useful, professional, and informative.

Was there something particular in the responses to your post that rubbed you the wrong way? Also, as jjd noted you asked for honest feedback, so it's a bit puzzling why you would then take offense.

Anyway, if you're still interested in pursuing game development, you should stick around. GDNet is a great community and a valuable resource, and it'd be foolish to pass it up just because you didn't get exactly the response you were expecting on your first time out.

How is that honest feedback? He is clearly just being a prick. I'd hardly call that professional as u said the forum is. Sorry, im just having a bad time and am sick of people acting like wankers.

I was entertained anyway, dont think I would have been upset by it either, may have made some kind of smart alec remark back, but only in jest!

Because it's true. I find it offensive that you take offense to someone trying to widen your perspective of what's possible.

This is a prime example of one of the internets main failings; it is bloody IMPOSSIBLE to convey emotion through text to those who aren't properly prepared to receive it. Your description of the members of this board as "smart arse computer freaks" tells us that you are somewhat uninitiated to the world of computer geekery.

Anyhow, welcome aboard, you'll have lots of fun if you don't take everything we say as a literal statement! ;) :P

I'm not sure how that's true, and I was confused by the response. Sure, games were made by one person in the late '80s and early '90s, but that doesn't follow it's therefore true today, and indeed, it certainly doesn't follow since the required resources to produce a game have significantly increased since then.

Having said that, jyk's reply was more than helpful and politely worded, and it was unfair to judge an entire forum as "bunch of smart arse computer freaks" based on one reply, especially as another reply had been helpful.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Many single-person teams produce games, and good ones at that. I didn't notice anyone limit the term 'game' to 'international chart-topping AAA software'. The required resources have risen somewhat, but so have the free resources available to developers.

Sure, I agree, I didn't mean to say it wasn't possible - just that it doesn't follow just because it was true in the 80s.

I don't think the point is that benen's idea was stupid (as he feared it might be), rather that it was somewhat redundant given that loads of people on these forums are already trying to work in teams.

I think he is right...
Can anyone point me to see playable game made by someone.
When I say playable I mean a game having:

Sound
Configurable user controls
Decent graphics or maps

Thx.

Have a look here. Other than that, I've been playing Warning Forever a lot recently which was written solo.

"Game" is not synonymous with "FPS," "RTS" or "MMORPG." There are literally thousands of games made by individuals that are incredibly entertaining and contain all of the features you list. Go peruse all the Flash games on sites like Newgrounds. Go familiarize yourself with the casual game market, and spend some time on the Indiegamer forums.

He was just using a simple sarcastic joke to tell you that he disagrees. He likely intended it as a light-hearted joke, not as a personal insult, as you have apparently taken it. You, however, have called him a prick and a wanker and all of us "smart arse computer freaks." Of the two cases, which sounds more impolite to you? If you were talking to him in person, would you react the same way?

Please note that programmers, in general, are known for being blunt. Being blunt is not, though, synonymous with being impolite. I recommend you read this section (and maybe the following section) of the article that it is in.

People who are new to the forums sometimes take things like this way too seriously

Additionally, I'd like to point out that this forum does have people which can quite literally be called professionals (meaning they work in the game industry or a related industry).
