I like how 96% of people are saying the same cuts should be applied in Europe and the USA.

Yet the one region they give a cut to is the one region where the Xbox 360 poses absolutely no threat. I don't think Sony have anything to worry about in Japan.

Looking at Japanese hardware sales I suspect Sony is more worried about Nintendo there. The Japanese have been buying DS Lites like crazy, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same with the Wii.

But yeah, the 360's sales have been pretty crazy there - it's being outsold by the GBA SP by a roughly 2-1 margin, and there are similar numbers on the Game Boy Micro.

^^^ That is what I thought as well. I think all this 'Wii' talk is making them uneasy.

those price cuts are retarded. they should double the launchprice. remember what the 360 sold for in the beginning? microsoft could have cashed in on all that money but instead they allowed for internet traders to do so.

Eh, I could see this as being an half-baked marketing scheme that was intended all along: announce an obscenely high price point1, wait for the outrage, then drop the price before launch.

1The latest copy of GameInformer did a launch-price-adjusted-for-inflation chart, comparing all of the major console in the last 35 years. While the PS3 is higher than the average, it's not higher by much. It's beaten out by 6 consoles out of a list of 20 (it being one of them), the Atari VCS at $672 (originally $200), the Matell Intellivision $838($299), the Neo Geo $1012 ($650), the 3DO $968($700), and the Sega Saturn $533($399). Of the sub-$300 machines, The SNES $297($199), N64 $258($199), Dreamcast $244($200), and GameCube $228($199), only the SNES was anything but marginally succesful.

you have to remember how much more popular the market is now. Its bigger than ever. That usually means it should be cheaper.

N64: 32,930,000 sold
Gamecube: 20,610,000 sold

I have a hard time understanding your "marginal" label. Hell, the XBox sold 24,000,000, does that mean it's marginal too?

On a side note: I am surprised to learn that the Gamecube sold less than the N64, considering the quality of games on the GC was significantly better than the N64.

Actually, you want to see something REALLY interesting? Take a look at how many home consoles nintendo has sold for each of their systems. Quite the... downward spiral they're in.

non sequitur. Increased popularity means an increase in demand, which without a change in supply causes an INCREASE in prices. Now, we do have a much larger supply of games today, but that still does not mean a "more popular market... usually means it should be cheaper".

I think that decision is very stupid on sony's part. First of they are only giving a price cut for the Japanese market, which I dont think will even do much because Japan is known for being highly supportive of Nintendo so the units they will sell there because of the price cut wont be as effective as it would if they sold them in lets say the states, I think Sony is digging a grave for themselves with the ps3...

Have you seen any screaming kids yelling "OH MY GOD NINTENDO GAMECUUUUUUUUBE!!!"

The launch of the N64 was a time when a lot of units were sold, and it was on the heels of the SNES which did well(I remember I almost bought one at launch, then waited and ended up with a PS1 instead.)

Iwata is going to break Nintendo's downward spiral.

Nintendo may not be doing so well in the console market, but in the handheld market it seems to be doing really quite well (to my knowledge).

Nintendo handhelds maybe. Sony has dominated console markets in Japan as much as everywhere else. The article says that there hasn't been a price cut yet for the PS3 in the states but that doesn't mean there won't be.

Nintendo isn't doing well in the handheld market, they're absolutely dominating it. It's outselling the PSP at a great pace, Gizmondo's parent company is out of business and the GP2X is still a handheld nearly no one has heard of.

But that is irrelevant to the point of the post. The popularity of consoles in Japan.
