Hi to all, I bought the book "Programming Role Playing Games with DirectX 2nd Edition - by Jim Adams"! Unfortunately, I'm having nightmares making a simple application as the code the book provides is awful! Could anyone that have read this book help me correct the code? (Or suggest me another book of the same type; programming games with DirectX 9) Thanks in advance!!

Is it the original book or a localized version?

What sort of errors are you getting? The book uses a fairly old DX8 SDK, and a lot of the functions have changed, taking different parameters or more/less parameters.

Yeah, it's been noted that the second edition (i.e. the one updated to use DX9)'s code won't compile without modifications, even on the SDK version provided with the book. The most you can do probably is look for fixed code online (maybe on the author's site?) or fix the code yourself.

Firstly, thanks for replying! Well, the book is the original one! Also, I tried to the book's official home page and found nothing!! However, because I'm a little pissed off, do you know any good books in programming games with DirectX 9!!

Note: the 2nd edition of that book has DirectX 9!!

Thanks again!!

You might be a beginner, and you can think that fixing the code by yourself is very difficult. However, it's not. It's just a matter of fixing some function call (you'll have to lookup the doc and find which params are missing/wrong or what is the correct function name). It doesn't take too much time, and can be seen as an excercise - remember that your goal is to learn DX, not to get some source code and play with it directly.

It's not like the book was filled with impossible to understand asm listings [smile]

If you're getting lot's of compiler errors (Usually very similar errors) you'll find it's usually because of one little thing such as a missed ; at the end of a line or a typo in a function call/declaration/definition. Things like that.
It's not a bug... it's a feature!
