So I want and watched Casino Royale again, and saw the preview for the new Rocky movie. It seems to me that there's a right way and a wrong way to make another Rocky movie, and I think they're doing it right. They seem perfectly aware of how ludicrous the premise is, and draw attention to it all the time. All the "straight men" in the film react to the idea by asking what the other guy is smoking when it comes up, and at the end of the day, it's about a man taking control of his life and getting help from his friends, and it doesn't matter if he wins, loses or gets killed in the ring. I'm pretty excited about it.

Although it sounds pretty cool in premise, I am not as excited about new 'Rocky' as I am about the new up and coming 'Rambo' flic. I mean look at the poster...

This movie is going to kick ass. Honestly, First Blood is one of my favorite action movies (although admittedly, Brian Dennehy likely makes the film, not Stallone)...However, like 'Rocky', IMO the last 2 Rambos are a rancid can of soup so a part of me remains skeptic that spoiled beans will remain spoiled.

Anyhow, whenever a film by Stallone comes into the equation, it is either going to be amazing or laborious to try and sit through. I am praying for the former.

New Rocky movie ==> [sick]
New Rambo movie ==> [sick]

Both franchises peaked with their debuts.

Rambo IV?!? So is he going to be fighting all the Israelis playing Afghans in this one?

I say the trailer for Rocky Balboa last week it looked like it could have some potential. But then again, trailers almost always look a lot better than the movie.

Hold on, seriously? I assumed Rain was kidding about there being a new Rambo movie. What's next... a sequel to Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!?

Well there have been 3 revisions of the storyline for Rambo IV, which probably means that the story is going to be shite.

All I know is that one of these storyline revisions (no longer being used), features Rambo going into Afghanistan to hunt for Bin Laden. A bit opportunist for a possible script in light of these times, if you ask me.

Here is the "new" script (which is highly subject to change.)

Quote:
Rambo is living a monastic lifestyle in Bangkok and salvaging old PT boats and tanks for scrap metal. When a group of volunteers bringing supplies into Burma disappears, a relative of one of the missing missionaries begs Rambo to find them. He heads off with a team of young guns determined to rescue those that have been taken.

(from wiki)

If the story ends up being shite, I won't be surprised. I am counting on it actually. I want this film to be either be incredibly good or incredibly bad for the purposes of being entertained.

I can only hope so. While we're at it, lets just revert back to the 80's completely.

So if Rocky dies in this one, does that mean we'll get "Rocky VI: Revenge of zombie Rocky!"?

Burma eh? So the bad guys are a brutal military dictatorship? Not a bad choice. Burma: State of Fear, Interview with makers of Burma: State of Fear. Will Stallone's film get ripped on as an attack on Dick Cheney? Vice President Cheney's Hand in the Burma Case, What Is Dick Cheney Doing in Burma?
You just couldn't resist, could you? You need to find your off switch, man, this is a thread about entertainment, not politics. A time and place for everything, ya know?

That's funny! You should have found your own off switch because now you've given me the opportunity to briefly educate you about the politics of Rambo movies.

Don't kid yourself, Rambo was as much about politics as it was about entertainment. First Blood was clearly about the post war plight of the Vietnam Vet. It projected the right wing stabbed in the back myth (as well as the myth of the spit on vet) into mainstream American consciousness: Rambo: Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war! You asked me, I didn't ask you! And I did what I had to do to win! But somebody wouldn't let us win! And I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting. Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about! [1] The sequels meshed with the rehabilitation of the image of the US military during the Reagan years and even contributed to the attitudes that produced the Iran-Contra scandal: Probably the most relevant current model for the pattern of zealous behavior being investigated by Congress is the film character John Rambo. (Zeal Without Understanding: Reflections on Rambo and Oliver North). This prepped the nation for talk about overcoming "Vietnam Syndrome" which still infuses American foreign policy. It could be argued that this attitude led to the current quagmire in Iraq (Beyond the “Vietnam Syndrome”). I could go on but I think that gets the point across. At any rate, examining the political implications of who Stallone targets as the bad guys in a new Rambo movie is not a stretch.

Rocky also had political overtones as well - outside of the overt flag waving - but I won't go into those unless you want to head in that direction.

Actually, there are a great many people who are perfectly aware of these things. We just dont have to speak up about them at every possible opportunity, and are content to say things like "Oh, god, please no, spare the children the agony of another Rocky."

I thought it was "Rocky V Plus Rocky II Equals...Rocky VII! 'Adrian's Revenge'!"?
Which would be zombie Rocky vs. zombie Adrian. Hopefully they would forget the whole boxing thing and just use chainsaws.

Edit: Google says you need to watch more Simpsons.

This thread was designed for hijacks. I didn't even know about the Rambo thing. I enjoyed the bad Rambo movies almost as much as I enjoyed the good one, so I'm looking forward to the sequel, no matter how it turns out.

Also, Sly looks awfully jacked in the Rocky preview. Is he that big in real life? I thought he was less gigantic recently. On the other hand, he needs to be huge for the Rambo movie, will we require him to lose his shirt any time he has a fight or does work.

And LessBread, here's a little something to quote into your next post if you (characteristically) can't come up with a way to contribute to the discussion and can't bear the thought of not being involved in it: Your first post was sufficiently clear and offputting to represent your opinion on the matter while defending your reputation as curmudgeon of the lounge. Spare us the sermons.

60-year old Rambo does what the 18-24 year old US Army can't do in Iraq..... This is too much fiction for me. Sorry.

Though, I'll watch Rambo IV before I watch Rocky IV (unless Oluseyi gives Rocky a Casino Royale-like review).

sidenote: leave LessBread alone. he's a unofficial political scientist and can't break the urge. plus the information is enlightening.
