Is multicast possible over the internet? If even some routers and ISP's disable the feature then the answer is essentially no right? Cheers

While not directly possible with IPv4, take a look at the MBone. With IPv6 it should be possible.

So the only practical way for my server to send a message over the net to all its clients is to do a seperate unicast to each one?

Correct.

In general, IPv4 multicast is a pretty broken concept, as there is no central DNS-like authority -- every router on the internet needs to be aware of every multicast group, for you to be able to join them. Obviously, that won't scale.

So my last statement stands? Is the only way for my server to send a message to all its peers to unicast the message to each peer?

That is why he used the word "correct".

You could ofcourse just use a broadcast, but seeing as most routers block these you would be limited to your local network
