Found something weird on google maps can anyone identify?

I had wikipedia for " Uninhabited Islands" and then I was just searching for them on google maps. That was one of the islands I had searched for, and then I moved the camera to look at another area. For some reason the text in the search box stuck.

Just a guess, but overall volcanic activity. An eruption blows the top off the volcano and then when the flow subsides the magma in the center drains back into the magma chamber it came out of leaving a hole in the center. That then left it shallow enough for plants to take root and grow. So there may well be a reef over top of it, but the reef didn't build a mountain.

Hmm. That gives me an idea. I wonder what an active volcano looks like from Google Earth. Is there a way to tell when the images used by GE were taken? I know the image of my house was taken 4 years ago. If that holds for the whole set, I wonder if images from an volcano that was active 4 years ago show magma flows and the like?

Interesting. I've found that Google Maps doesn't cover areas outside of the US very well.

totally random: the one in the upper left looks like a ":|" smiley. now a bit to the right is a more happy one ^^
