It all depends on your programming experience really. Direct3D has a .x loader which you could use, but if you're new to programming Direct3D is still way ahead of you.

You should really start by learning a language of choice ( Java/C#/C++/Python/whatever ) and get pretty fluent in using that languages before trying to load models in whichever format and display them on the screen.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help, but if you provide more details about your programming experience, or the language you intend to learn, you'll undoubtedly get more informational replies ;)

I recommend you give BlitzBasic (www.blitzbasic.com) a try. It's very easy to use and it can load .x and .3ds files. Also, the syntax you use to write games with is very similar to that of VB.

You can use VB to make games, however, my preference would be C++ if you want to eventually write code games professionally, if not VB is a perfectly acceptable choice.

There is also a beginners section on this site you should definitely check out.

Edit: Here's the link
"The FFT - an algorithm the whole family can use" ... and for my next joke...
