Three or four months ago, I quit my job as a firefighter here as it wasn't paying the bills, and there was little chance of promotion any time soon. I decided structure fire really isn't worth it for me, though I still love forest fire (which is basically seasonal). I also really can't sit in an office at a computer or handle phones all day without losing a bit of sanity. I like to be out instead. This is how I am. Next week I'm getting tested for my commercial driver's license. [smile] I also have two applications right now: one with a geothermal power plant as a work hand, and one with a trucking company with whom I'm getting a pre-hire letter tomorrow. The geothermal plant pays $20 an hour, so hopefully I get that job, and if I don't I'm already guaranteed another as a driver. So yay! I'm a blue-collar truck driver! XD It's fun, honestly. It can be a pain in the neck some times, and other times, it is thoroughly satisfying to be in that truck driving around. But, I guess it depends on the person, and how you look at it. I love it. So, there was a thread a while back from capn_midnight about what you want to do with your life. This is part of my answer. [smile] You do what you enjoy that is also best for you. I like working with trucks, I like working on them, I like driving them, and I like talking to other people who do the same. Find something you're good at that can actually keep your wallet reasonably full, and keep at it. That's my answer, as far as occupations go. [smile] Salud, Benji

You're quitting a firefighting job?! Geez man, I know dozens of people who are chomping at the bit to BE one. The competition to get into that is rediculously steep, I'm suprised you are just dumping it becuase it doesn't suit you perfectly.

I mean, you probably put alot of work into getting that position? At least EMT, probably paramedic depending on where you are, and all the training and testing you went through?
Sure is a big 'ol world.

Prior investment is not a good reason to stick with something that does not suit you IMO. Sometimes you just gotta do other things.

It's not like it takes a 4year or even 8year investment in a degree to be a firefighter so I can see how it'd be easy to walk away. Now if you spend 4-8years to become a doctor and then quit you are nuts.
I used to have my basic EMT license and worked in a hospital for a year and was quite good at it(got recommendation letters from patients, etc) but I hated it every day I was there. I hated seeing blood, suffering, etc. And you think you know what stress is? Well, you don't until everyday someone's life is literally in your hands and how well you do your job! The jokes/crude humor my fellow EMT workers would make all the time i.e. hey want to go see the dead guy cut in half by a gun in the morgue, etc. It's pretty skate job though when nothing is happening and you are just sitting around on your butt or washing the ambulance.
I could probably be making alot more money than I am now if I went back to doing that but I'd hate every minute of it like I did the first time and I don't know how long I could put up with it before I quit or got fed up anyways.
On the other hand I've had jobs that had no stress(think retail) at all and therefore don't pay jack and those are just as bad since you slowly die from lack of challenges/mental stimulation/lack of living wage.
But if you are one of the lucky ones to get a job you actually like and get paid a decent living wage be thankful since it may never happen again!

Exactly. You've about summed it up very well, daviangel.

Heck, I'll humor the situation a bit, but this is what happens. You know that one guy at the office you absolutely hate? The guy who's always on everyone's case about everything? The guy who even affects your quality of work just with his presence alone, but when he's gone you do great, so of course he thinks you're crap? That guy? Imagine being in the office with him for 24 hours straight, taking orders from him. The environment is paramilitary, so what's your only response? "Yes sir" or "No sir." Then at the end of said 24 hours, a huge brush fire breaks out and you're out for another, say, 32 hours with the bastard, taking more orders. Even just in that respect alone, you'd want to say, "God, just shoot me now," because that's not something you particularly want to deal with. Man that paycheck had better be good. . . .

I feel that, all in all, it was an important development in my professional life, because it taught me EXACTLY what my limits are, just what I can and absolutely cannot handle. You think you can go and do anything in your life? Be anything? No. Truth is, you can't. You just have to learn what you can and cannot be, and you will learn it if you haven't already.

At this point, I'm happy. I'm happy because I have a good job now, and I'm happy because over the course of two years, I have acquired skills that could potentially get me even more some day. But, we'll see.

Good for you Ben!. I quit running game development as it wasn't paying the bills either so, even though I'm in a job paying teachers, my 'Plan Z' (winning the lottery) is still very high on my list. [smile]

Good luck!
Thank you evelyn. [smile] It's always nice to hear from you. I'm sure the jackpot's comin' soon. :P

LOL, well I don't plan on anything cross-country, at least not for long. I see what you're saying. :P

Thanks for the response so far. [smile]

My father-in-law is a truck driver, and I wouldn't recommend it for any long term career path. Once you decide you want to settle down or start a family, it becomes a big problem. Will you want to be on the road all the time when your children learn to walk?

Truck driving does pay fairly well, but it might become a problem later in life. I hope it works out for you!
