I was sitting at my desk, procrastinating working on my senior design project that is due in oh.. 8 days, and I figured I'd post up and see what sorts of stuff my fellow Loungers are working on. Besides doing some programming setup work for a streaming video server for cellphones (don't ask, my professor wanted it), and setting up rendering settings and doing animating for an animation, I'm also working on a damn near total conversion mod for UT2004. It is is actually a good part of my senior design project. We're having to follow documented professional methods of design and well, document our processes and how they relate to our findings. We're implementing our design with UT2004 engine. I'm serving the roles of lead designer, project manager, programmer, and being a handyman for level editing stuff. I've got three other guys on the team, including the actual level designer, a guy doing modeling and texturing, and another guy handling rigging and animating. What about you guys?

Work:
  • Finalizing the intranet login system and activating it.
  • Developing an extensible forms class.
  • Reworking the unit test scaffolding and setting up the new development environment.

Theory:
  • Expanding and proving the contract system for Xhed.
  • Detailing the optimization system.
  • Finishing my C++ tutorial.

Practice:
  • Finishing up my Blog's beta (current hiatus, as I have nothing to write on there).
  • Weirs, my video game project.
  • An unnamed real-time raytracer prototype.

Classes (I hate these):
  • Compiler assignment -- we have to build the code generator part for a toy language.
  • Human computer interaction -- we have to finish off our application in the next 5.5 hours and submit it along with all the documentation we can muster.
  • Artificial intelligence -- demoing my system tomorrow; it's an application for intelligently scheduling classes.
  • Algorithms -- My last assignment is due in the next 5.5 hours. The final is later next week.

Projects (I like these):
  • Novarunner, my amazing space RPG. In space.
  • Propane Injector, my 2D/3D cross-platform game api.
  • Stick Soldiers 3, sequel to the games lots of people apparently loved.
  • Various other things I've gotten suckered into.
I am a busy beaver -- it's not even including the stuff I have to handle for my internship application. [wow]

You're looking at it. [smile]

I'm also doing a little simple D3D work, the reasons for which should hopefully become apparent in the near future...

Work:

Working on pulling certificate information from SMART cards used by our clients. Currently having middleware issues(as in the Card reader manufacturer doesn't wnat to give us the SDK for the hardware), so I'm stuck for the time being, tryin to find some way around it.

On the Side:

Small web project. A page used by a small area marketing group that wants to later extend their services to area DJs, promoters, and the like.

Personal:
I just got some source for bittorrent. I don't know what I want to do with it yet.

I am also working on a compilers assignment for a toy language (Minijava..woo), our next (current, but I haven't started yet) assignment is the transformation to an intermediate representation.

I'm also working on finding models to accurately predict both the success and runtime of planners given a set of problem features.

Partially related, I'm working on my framework to implement both supervised and unsupervised decision trees where I can stick in arbitrary models in the leaves, and analyze the results.

I haven't really had time for fun stuff, but I did draw a room in Gimp the other day, geared towards an oldschool point and click adventure game (think Shadowgate).

Main focus (ha!) is my final year degree project which is a GPGPU program using OpenGL.

I'm also kicking around ideas for a GUI system in my head, which gives me something to consider when I'm walking about the place.

And playing Civ4... which is kinda a project in an of itself [grin]

my current projects, beyond very dull second year assignments, centre around researching simulating massive numbers of AI agents that feel, to the user, unique, and populate cities to an accurate degree, and are all fully interactive.

The goal is to make the player feel like they are in a world full of CITIES, and each city having hundreds of thousands of living people that interact with each other. I'm talking millions of 'people' that you can kill off, have moods, and effects like real world nations.

And all this running on standard PC hardware, with room for a 3D RPG engine to run.

In other words I'm going to fail, but still that is beside the point.

I am also doing research into the effects on a player as they have less and less direct control over units in an RTS, but still have intelligence in the units in such a way that they don't (usually) charge to their deaths. Charge of the Light Brigade anyone?

Also in the works:
Proposal for testing some theories of FPS games, mainly how does time before first contact on a standard, well known map effect winning out comes, and then maybe study how a randomized, but fair, map layouts effect player's score. This one needs some university funding, as I don't have the money to set up 8 to 16 PCs in a controlled environment.
Other thing in the works is studying procedurally generated levels of detail in an outdoor environment. How to get 'real world draw distances' in a game. Some what ties into a theory for accurate mapping of 100km by 100km + map sizes on PC hardware to be used in games.

Things That are Holding Me Up!

  1. East-Asian Language Support

    1. Invoke IME (input method editor) with code alone

    2. Allow CJK glyphs to be displayed without 'Enabled east-Asian support' installed for Windows XP

  2. Modify Frostwinds (MMORPG) to have more geometry based graphics, and ridding existing issues by:

    1. Design network (design and) code that does not rely on interpolation to determine player position.

    2. Design game that reuses Frostwind's code base, thus to preserve my free time for the next three years.

  3. Native GUI wrappers (via P/Invoke) for Mac OsX, and (GTK?) for Ubuntu.

School:
I'm working on my semester long senior project. It is a web-based code editor that integrates with SVN repositories and Google Accounts, and provides syntax highlighting for too many languages.

I actually have my senior project due really soon as well. 8 days though? Heh, try more like 8 hours :) Actually I managed to get a fews days extension due to a medical thing, but I'd still consider my procrastination ill-advised.

School:

- Systems programming assignment: my last assignment for my systems programming class. It has to do with linux forking, and shared memory. Due tomorrow night. I'd better get cracking on it

Home:

- XNA stuff: I am mostly just playing around with XNA at this point. I don't have any real plans for a serious project, as I don't have the motivation or the desire to commit the rest of my life to finishing a game.
- Todo 3.0: yeah, I still need to make some changes to the installer, then I can finally release it as a non-beta.
- Theory of Video Game Fun (article): Yeah, I am slowly piecing together an article that tries to classify "fun". I haven't done much work on it, and I don't expect to do much work on it until finals are over (in three-ish weeks).

In my adventures with SDL.NET, I'm currently making UltimateSuperAwesome Pong, which will *hopefully* have 4 players, both online and on one PC. Hopefully it'll all be done by May 12th, which is my birthday and when I can set up a GDNet account. Afterwards, I'm going to mess with the Tao Framework, and try OpenGL with SDL.

Uni:

Finished all my IT-related classes from the first two years, so now I'm stuck with Finance, HR, and Politics... which is why I am procrastinating by focusing on:

Play:

Solariad - my Java/LWJGL-based 3D single-player Solar System-based 4X/RTS, inspired by IG2, Haegemonia, and R:TW. Currently wrestling with implementing a task manager to replace the global update() calls for AI and UI.

Mainly working on my final year project at the minute, which is due to be handed in in three weeks. I've finished programming the thing (it's a terrain generator with erosion simulation), just busy writing up the damn report.

Other uni work includes making a two and a half minute video, programming a KNN classifier, and making a 3D rpg demo as a group assessment.

Apart from that I'm really only working on my new 2D engine, trying to get a decent polished demo done by the time I finish Uni. I usually tend to make an engine and then give up and start again, so trying to actually finish a game for once. Oh, and playing lots of CS:S =)
