Hail All, For those that are unaware, I'm running a tutorial here on GDNet called "How to Make Your Own MMORPG (Miniature Multiplayer Role-player Game)" via my journal "Man vs. the MMORPG". The goal of the tutorial is to a) demonstrate that it either is or is not possible for a single person to implement a MMORPG and b) to provide a place for the GDNet community to send new developers asking the question "How do I make my own MMORPG?" With that in mind, I thought I'd open it up to the creative minds here on GDNet to help fill in the gaps of some of the list-based items. Please be creative and have fun with this.

What I'm looking for specifically are:
- Items:
Armor {Leather, Metal} for various body parts
Weapons {Daggers, Swords, Maces, Staves, Wands, Crossbows}.
   Potions
   Food/Drink
- NPC Names: First and Last Names
- Favors: Things which can be exchanged for favor from Osiris, god of the underworld.
- Special Abilities: Abilities for the 4 classes Tank, Nuker, Healer, and Handyman.
- Quests: I dont need to explain this do I?
- Unique Events: Special events and or encounters that happen randomly
If you'd like more info on these, feel free to check out my journal for an introduction and description of the tutorial. Please provide the above here in this thread with the below formats: NPC Names First Name & Last Name Type of NPC you'd like them to be {Quest Dispenser, Class Trainer, Profession Trainer, Event NPC, Banker, Merchant, or Psychic} - If it's relevant to the name Items Item Name (Preferably something created with metal, Leather, or wood; ie, Rake is fine, as is Tanned Buckler, Medieval Spoon, etc...) Item Type (Armor or Weapon, see above for specific sub-item types) Item Description (brief - 1 or 2 lines) Any Special Abilities (positive or negative) tied to the weapon (these may be ignored) Item Level (Between 1 and 75) Things in Exchange for Favor Title Short Description How much Favor (1-100) Special Abilities Name Short Description Class (Tank, Nuker, Healer, Handyman) Target Effect Quests Name Description Text Goal Reward (If you care to specify - if it's relevant to the quest) Random Events (These are events similar to what you'd encounter in LoGD/LoRD PHP/BBS games) Name Description Options Thanks all! I'll add these to my lists for addition to the Tutorial. If you don't care to contribute, no problem. Note: If you'd like to voice your input about the Tutorial, please do so at my journal. Reserve this thread for list items. Thanks!! Cheers!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a wild guess that you're aiming for a traditional, Tolkien-esque fantasy MMORPG.

NPC Names
First Name & Last Name
Type of NPC you'd like them to be {Quest Dispenser, Class Trainer, Profession Trainer, Event NPC, Banker, Merchant, or Psychic} - If it's relevant to the name

Beatrice "Little Bo" Peep.
Quest Dispenser.
Has lost her sheep and has no idea where to find it. Careless? Certainly, but she's always had a knack for misplacing things. Her late husband was found murdered less than a year ago. Could these two incidents by any chance be related..?

Jack Anjyll
Event NPC. (Water Carrier.)
Jack is the town's water carrier. He goes up the hill to fetch a pail of water, brings it back down the hill and, using his "l337 water-carrying skillz", manages to do this a few times each day without injury. (Well, no injury that requires more than brown paper and vinegar.) Jack suffers from a multiple personality disorder, but he may hold some clues...

Ruddy "Ruddy Hell" Haring
Merchant.
Harry officially sells potatoes. Very good potatoes. Maris Pipers, raised by his own hands. ("Perfect for roastin' an' chips!") He's also a dealer in potions. Some of them are "technic'ly legit".

Travis McBastard (of "McBastard & Son")
Profession Trainer (Builder / Spy)
Travis is a professional builder who has a useful, but surprisingly unsuccessful sideline in spying. (His white-painted horse-drawn cart even has: "McBastard & Son. A Smile, A Song & A Secret Document" painted on the sides.) The player could learn a lot from Travis, but only if he can get him to stop banging on about different types of cement and the fine art of plastering.

Shouter
Ability to shout VERY LOUDLY INDEED without the need for a loudhailer.
Class: (Soldier, Actor, Publican)
Target: Easily-swayed, impressionable people, rednecks, hicks, etc.
Effect: Makes people think you're a figure of authority. Until they realise you're actually a spotty, wet-behind-the-ears teenager (etc.)

Goal
Reward (If you care to specify - if it's relevant to the quest)

Name: "Find My Sheep!"
Description: Beatrice has lost her favourite ovine. (Why she keeps one is something best left to the imagination.) In order to win her heart, you must agree to find it... but it won't be easy. Where has it gone? Did it run away, or was it abducted? And does it have something to do with the late Mr. Peep's untimely demise..?

Goal: Find "Little Bo" Peep's missing sheep.

Reward: Respect from the villagers -- nobody pulls the wool over your eyes! (See what I did there?) Also, you win Beatrice's heart and she becomes much more willing to ignore the large pimple on your nose. And your cheap medieval-era glasses. (Oh: and the speech impediment...)

Name: "Gerroff Moi Laaaand!"
Description: Whenever you wander onto some stranger's property (or venture anywhere near it), there is a probability that said landowner will appear and demand what you're doing on said property. Usually while brandishing a gun and pointing it in your general direction.
Options: (a) Run away; (b) Explain your Quest (then run away); (c) Invent some plausible bullshit -- e.g. "I'm a Journeyman Poet looking for inspiration for my next sonnet. Do you have a pretty daughter / son*?"

*(delete according to sexual preference.)

Here is the obligatory "give that to him" quest, with soöe random changes (the higher level you are, the more changes you get)

Basic Quest
You must take item I from Q and give it to person P.

Events
* that's OK, P is at home, just find his home and give I to him/her
* P is not at home. He's getting drunk in the street not that far, so that should not be difficult to find him
* * except that he don't want to give you the reward for the quest
* when you arrive, the guards seize I (because it's "tecnic'ly legal", as stimarco said). You have to explain the problem to Q. He is not happy.
* you give I to P, but he tries to kill you.
* someone is impersonating P. The real P wants you to get I back to him
* I is illegal, a guard intercepts you and ask you to get nore jobs from Q and to report to him. Eventually, you may be discovered.

Oh well, it seems that you can get loads of variations with a simple quest :)

Cygnus_X
Cygnus_X
Basic Quest
You need to get across the river, but you can't as the ferry attendant's girlfriend has left him, thus putting him in a bad mood. He refuses to operate the ferry until his lover returns.

Events
You find said ex-girlfriend in the town, but she will not reunite with the ferry attendant unless he can prove his love by recovering the Ruby of Antiquity which is currently guarded by the evil dragon Slur on top of the Mountain of Great Despair. You must recover the ruby and give it to the ferry attendant so he can win back his lost love.

Of course, the ruby is not enough to please this woman. The ex-girlfriend adds a second request (once you've completed the first). Collect 100 rare golden roses, which are scattered/hidden across the island you're currently on. I hope you've been collecting these things since you started (even though you didn't know their worth at the time) as some roses will be located at the very beginning of the game!

After you get the ruby and the roses, he girlfriend will return, and the ferry attendant will resume his business.

Sandman
Sandman
Eastern Sword Of Implausibility

Fashioned after the weapons commonly wielded by slightly girly looking characters in JRPGs, this weapon is nearly seven feet long, two feet broad and should probably weigh about three quarters of a ton, yet can be wielded one handed with ease. However, in order to use it, the wielder must 'power-up' before each combat. The powering up process basically consists of standing still and looking very angry for a short period of time.

Armour of Extreme Spikiness And Impracticality

This suit of plate armour is unfeasibly heavy looking and has several enormous spikes the size of greatswords poking out of pretty much every piece. The wearer of this armour cannot actually wield a weapon, nor can he move any faster than a very slow plod, as any attempt to do either would likely result in him impaling himself. However, no enemy can actually get close to him either, for much the same reason.

The female version of this armour is just as spiky and offers exactly the same protection, but only covers the chest, groin, calfs and forearms.

Helm Of Protection Vs. Helmet Hair +4

A must for all those fashion conscious adventurers, the Helm Of Protection Vs. Helmet Hair +4 is specially designed to prevent the wearer's haircut from being spoiled from being shoved into a helmet 24/7. It is also manufactured from the extremely rare and difficult to find metal, Invisiblium, so as to avoid concealing the wearer's incredible good looks.
Jeffool
Jeffool
Items:
Angel Skin Cloak
Skin gleaned from an angel wrestled from the Heavens.
This armor is completely resistant to dark magic, but against man-made weapons functions as well as cotton.

Food:
Bottle of milk.
There's something special about this milk. After about three bottles it doesn't have the health effects it once had, and you're not quite as ambulatory. In fact, too many bottles and you may black out and wake next to an ugly bar maid!

Favors:
Your Soul
After your death, your eternal essence shall forever work under the boot of Osiris.
+50 (After all, just who do you think you are?!)

Tattoo On Your Forehead
Hip to modern advertising, Osiris understands good word of mouth. It's easy to sell your soul, but to show eternal devotion while alive also has its perks from Osiris, and problems from other NPCs.
+25

Special Abilities:
Keen nose (Healer, Handyman)
A keen sense of smell can often save the smart adventurer.
Target: Passive ability
Effect: Player is made alert of demons approaching from any direction earlier than other players by their smell of sulfur.
Target: Food.
Effect: Detect status effects from included herbs (poison, health and strength bonuses.)

I see this turning into something along the lines of Legend of the Red Dragon. =)

You could use a name generator for town and character names. I may have some simple code that does it but there's an article on GDNet that explains a better way (using "grammars" IIRC).

Enemies will die by the mere thought of what an ability with such a name could do, they will all perish during the build-up sequence:

The old man looks upon his fatigued opponent with a small grin on his face
- Ha! You stronger than I thought! But Sheng Long not yet reveal true power!
Suddenly a strange light covers the background as the old man bursts into flames. Floating in the air in an awesome pose, he yells
- Winged Dragon Eternal Fist of Sheng Long!
The power released from his body is so great that the opponent falls on the ground crying like a baby

If you ask me, there should be a lot more Easter Eggs. This is a game development forum, after all. Mancomb Fourplog should probably be in there, somewhere (for the dimwitted, or young -- Guybrush Threepwood). Perhaps Weavin Twinenude (Bobbin Threadbare anyone. Loom? No? Okay.)?

Weavin can be looking for his mother (I crack myself up -- really, I do). Mancomb should probably be trying to complete some sort of task ... maybe ... a challenge ... Three Trials!

I am babbling.
