Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Team name: Reality Check Team. Project name The Viking Age Brief description: The Viking Age is an SMORPG. The game is a realistic MMORPG set during the viking era some were between 700 to 1100 AD.Players will have access to such varied elements as crafting, combat, land and structure ownership, advanced pet system, ships and a whole range of resource collection from collecting milk from your cow(which will grow and get better)to felling trees, fishing from land or off your boat to hunting whales and setting traps. As you can tell the game is heavily based on freedom. You might spend your days mining ores and then go fight only to find that the strength you got from mining lets you deal more damage in combat. You could take quests that will actually have an effect or you could simply wander out of were you start and never look back.Players can create everything in the game if they have trained their skills. There are no character classes, you get better at what you do,both in terms of those skills and attributes and those attributes can then affect other skills. Remember always that the game is also based as much as possible on realism. There will be very little magic(mainly only in the Norse mythology and even then not in the way it is currently portrayed). Also a player will never be able to wander the lands slaying anything and everything.Partying will always be of great importance be it to hunt down the bear that attacked a farm, fighting off a viking raiding party or simply going whaling. We are currently in talks with another concept/texture artist and the rest of the art team is filling up nicely. However we are currently basing our recruitment more towards the programming side of the project now. Thats said all positions listed on the recruitment thread at this time remain open.
thevikingage
thevikingage
We're still mainly looking to recruit in the field of programmers although spaces still remain in the other positions. However the main reason for this post is we are now looking for an assistant game designer who can help consolidate ideas and more importantly help with the technical side of the design. The Technical Game Document is timetabled in for quite a tight schedule thus we are looking for someone to help with the game design and more importantly who knows what will be needed to get the current features implemented. With the current team numbering twelve with more still interested getting this completed is essential.

Just a small update, the recruitment thread has been moved to the studio site which can be found here:

Well we've added programmer number three to the tech team and the project is really picking up speed now! :) Some of the above positions still remain open however so if you'd like your chance to join simply apply at the above address or you can email me at whoateallthepie(at)hotmail(dot)com

Oh and since people like their art:

We have refined our recruitment and are now looking for some additional staff in previously unmentioned roles. To save filling half a page with title and explanations, all current vacancies can be found here on the studio site:

Thanks Atrieyu, although you left out build a ship, gather your buddies and go pillage. ;) There is a huge amount of freedom available to players not only in what they can do but in how they can play the game.

For example you may simply leave the first town you start in and join a small band of bandits raiding caravans and pirating the seas. You may decide to stay in the town and set up a small workshops making anything from weapons to meals to carts to healing salves to siege equipment to fishing rods.

You may decide to move outside of town and set up a small farm growing crops or raising animals or bees or for an easier but more dangerous way to acquire the same resources you may go hunting and trapping.

You may decide why bother wandering around town so much when you can simply take it over and have it run the way you want to, improving the towns farms, workshops dwellings and so forth. Or you can simply take control of a town, muster an army and set off pillaging the countryside and your neighbours.

Even these very different areas of the game are played differently. The combat for example is very faced paced and once you've engaged your opponent is almost twitched based allowing you to fight strategically or simply bash at your enemy.

Crafting on the other hand takes time and patience. Although there is no irritating system of failing to produce anything, crafters will still have to combine the correct components otherwise they will produce items of lesser quality.

Town management is carried out almost like an RTS with a deed overhead system. This system also means that players can autogenerate quests for other players. Towns can ally with other towns against powerful foes, produce carts which trade between towns and even have patrols operate between towns. Due to the activity morph system you will see those town leaders who sit around all day telling others what to do actually become fat while the hardworking folk become muscular. Dynamic and evolving economies will keep everyone busy while storyline events will keep nations at each others throats while lesser kingdoms within those nations will vie for supreme power.

Okay I got carried away. ;) TVA will offer a lot of new and exciting opportunities to players while giving them a beautiful evolving world to live in while they decide whether to live by the sword, the workbench or the quill. With an early alpha expected before the end of the summer we at Reality Check Studios hope to offer as many people as possible a glance back to The Viking Age.

Interesting game idea, I had a very similar idea before, which kind of formed after reading a book where a Norse village travels out to find new land. I might be interested in helping out, is there any way I can talk to you, like msn messenger?

Certainly StJoris, you can contact me personally if you wish, my messenger is:
whoateallthepie(at)hotmail(dot)com.
I will be online again tomorrow(as it is 3am now)so I will hopefully be able to talk to you then. I would also be interested to hear of your previous idea. :)

Thanks mainieri, who knows you may be one of the first alpha testers. :)

Just for anyone who has been directed to the old community site the new one is here on the studio domain:
http://vikings.rc-studio.net/forum/index.php

For others the TVA community is a great place to sit back and have a chat with fellow Norsemen for example. For the RC team you guys provide us with a lot of feedback on the route the project is taking and we love to hear your own thoughts and suggestions for the development. It is also the first place updated as the game comes together. Well however you view it check us out. Remember it might be a bit quiet for a while as we drag members from the old forums kicking and screaming to the new and improved ones. See you all there. :)

Just a small update to say we are currently looking for programmers/architects who are familiar with network programming, server clustering, load balancing, interest management on servers and data stream compression.

If you are interested you can email email me at whoateallthepie(at)hotmail(dot)com.

Kudos on some great artwork and a nice game concept. The Viking Age is a great period - I've thought of making something myself there at some point, though more along the lines of a strategy game/RPG. It's a period rich in gaming potential.

I note that according to your website, you are "amateurs" (which is not a bad thing at all - most of us here are). Since I do not find previously completed games on your website, I would recommend you take some advice from all those who have tried to beat the path before you: start small and simple.

Monster projects (a subject I believe I can speak on with some authority ;) ) are not the way to start or go as an amateur or a future professional.

Hey Strategy, thank you for your comments. Indeed the Viking age is a very interesting one but unfortunately it is poorly documented so in trying to create historical and real world accuracy I spend a lot of my time carrying out research. I don't mind of course as I feel this brings a lot to the gameplay.

An example of this is in the resource list which currently consists of thirty hours plus of research alone but is so accurate that something a player can achieve in game will be achievable in real life. So for example using certain herbs ingame for certain effects with are mirrored almost directly real life.

The project itself is starting small containing only a single isolated nation which we can use as a base to build on. Also the team is a mix of experienced developers and relative new bloods who are eager to improve on their skills which we feel is a nice mix.

I have of course have been told the start small and grow as opposed to start big and wither many many times but I fully believe in the abilities of the team to achieve all that is set out for it. I just hope you'll be one of our customers once we're up and running I'll be one of yours. :)

Nice idea for a game and best of luck finishing it up.:)
