People quoting 300

Why is half the Internet constantly quoting bits from 300? Stuff like "THIS!! IS!! SPARTA" is just doing my head in. The film was ass, why are so many people (mis)quoting the same lines over and over and over from a crap film? Meh, I'm having to keep away from my favourite forums (apart from here, to rant) because of it. Bloody hell.

I haven't seen the movie, but I have been using the "THIS IS SPARTA!!" quote. It makes you sound hip.

I wouldn't worry too much, though. In another month, people will have found a new fad.

Be happy you haven't walked into this conversation.

n00b1: "THIS!! IS!! SPARTA!!!"
n00b2: "I'm Rick James, bitch!!"

Hm I have not seen that southpark episode. I will search on it. IF it really says this is Lesbos(a greek island) I think that is might be quite funny ^_^ . Thanks for the info :D

I liked the movie. It made me feel a little bit gay at times, but I like watching movies based on comic books, and Frank Miller seems to be doing neat stuff with the idea lately. I don't know why they added all the political maneuvering on the homefront and took out Stumbelios, but there was chopping and shouting and defiance, which always makes for good pulp drama.

Why the hate? If all the Monty Python quotes got replaced with 300 quotes for one stinking day, I'd consider it a victory for geek wit.

Think Sappho more than Lesbos.

I thought the Internet existed because half the people weren't doing anything.

Because half the internet is conservative, and "300" was basically a giant right-wing circle jerk. Republicans loved that crappy movie.

And the other half of the internet gets off putting down the first half because they're conservative [wink]

Which shouldn't be the case if you think about it. Leonidas would have made fun of our "greatest generation" the same way that he made fun of the Athenians. The men that went to fight WWII weren't professional warriors, they weren't Spartans, they were farmers, teachers, plumbers, steel workers - who took up arms to defend their nation - just like the Athenians did. Leonidas would have mocked the men that fought at Normandy and Iwo Jima, just as the chickenhawks mock them today.

I saw a little bit of reference to Iraq, but is Leonidas really supposed to be the Greek Dubya? I can't see how seeing that a)Leonidas is competent and b)Leonidas was right about: the strategy, the oncoming onslaughter, rejecting the enemy's proposal, and having one of his warrior tell the other Greek Kingdoms about the battle.

So what was so right-wing about it again?

Also, he didn't mock them that badly. He just made sure to point out the differences between weekend warriors and trained battle-ready troops.

I didn't actually see the movie :) Conservative blogs were abuzz with excitement about it, though. Were there not scenes depicting feeble politicians hesitant about war? I heard there were supposedly comparisons to be made to the Democratic Congress. I also heard conservatives accusing liberals of disliking the movie (and I didn't even know "liberals" had much of an opinion on it) because unabashed masculinity and "martial virility" (LOL) make us uncomfortable. See here for example.

I just thought the previews and everything I've heard about the film (especially from fans) makes it sound like typical Hollywood crap. The jarring, pseudo-artistic visual style alone seemed cheap and cheesey to me and was an immediate turn off.
