I''d like to use DirectX, but I have VC++5, which doesn''t have the right stuff ''out-of-the-box''. What do I need. I very much dislike large downloads (like the full SDK), so minimal stuff would be appreciated. Thanx in advance, ThamasTah

Ehmmm...How would you develop DirectX apps without the SDK??? !

Ok...You''ll need the SDK! Just dl the C++ version (smaller than the full SDK)... And you should be able to use VC5.0, but if I were you I would get myself VC6.0!!!

But hey! Why use DirectX, when we have OpenGL!!! (Until recently I used DirectX, but started to use OpenGL and I have never been so happy before)

I agree whole heartadly with Roquqkie OpenGL is far superior (when it comes to interface) versus DirectX (IMHO). But if u want to use DX and not have a huge download do this:

Go to the download site from microsoft for the SDK.
Scroll down and select just the core package (7 MB)
and the documentation (10? MB). Then u simply copy the
libs and includes over into your Visual C++ 5.0 include/lib
directories and wallah u can compile apps. But u will have no
samples so hopefully u have a cool on that ur doing...

OpenGL doesn''t do sound, input, multiplayer or 2D acceleration.

Just because you''re outnumbered doesn''t mean you''re wrong.

To furby100:

No ofcourse not!!! But try to download ClanLib...Then you'll have support for: Sounds, Music, Multiplayer, GREAT 2d-acc. etc!

Trust me, if you've tried this once, you'll never ever use DX again!

Btw. You can use OpenGL for 2d! Simply create a plane, texture it and make it's z-position constant!!!

and btw. you are both outnumbered and wrong!!!

I want to use DX for input and sound. I use OGL for 2d in my current game. As far as I can tell, it is indeed better than D3D. It definately is easier: it works like you expect it to. Especially setup. I just could grasp D3D''s init routines (I didn''t try hard, though).

I plan on using DI and DS because I used them in VB and liked them very much.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone.

(By the way, by SDK, I meant the big-ass 180MB one...)

I agree, use OpenGL. I learned DirectX on my own and spent a lot of time learning just how to set up and initialize DirectX. Then, this semester, in one of my senior graphics classes, we started using OpenGL. It is so much easier! Use it for the 3D. For the input, just use DirectInput or Windows (if the game doesn''t require break-neck speed). For sound, use DirectSound. For multiplayer, DirectPlay. But you''ll be making a smart move in using OpenGL for the 3D. Making lights and doing transformations are easy in OpenGL!
