okay, depending on the complexity involved, this is what you need to do:

Mortal Kombat (i.e. simple): all you need for this type of engine is the ability to work out punch, kick, low punch, low kick, jump punch, jump kick. now, this is the same set up used for all characters. so, if you create a data file for each character the contains about the images used for the animation (punch1.bmp, punch2.bmp, punch3.bmp, etc), and how long the animation lasts for. then, if the user presses the punch button, just play the animation and add collision detection. note: with jump kicks, keep the animation data as if he was standing, and then move the image around instead. that way you have a much greater degree of control. repeat for running/kicks/blah.

streetfighter: muhahahahahaha. pray.

things you need:

Special Moves
Combos
About 50 different characters, each with their own set of moves n combos.
A team of about 100 animators.

special moves: k, this usually requires a whole load of digital pyrotechnics, and unless you plan on using a mixture of 2d/3d, you''re screwed.

combos: keep a little counter going of how many times you''ve hit the enemy before they''ve had a chance to recover.

characters: self explanotory

animators: same as above.

storing moves: use a crude database (more like a spreadsheet actually). so it looks something like this:

Button Press 1 Button Press 2 ... Button Press X Attack ID
Punch - - 0
Kick - - 1
F Punch - 2

and so on. then, just keep going through the list until u find the right combonation, and do that move.

man, i spend to much time coding fighting games. 3D is a hell of a lot more easier for 1 on 1 - less animators needed and not as complex collision detection.

hope this helps (it bloody better)

Thanx, we''re going for the Street Fighter thing here. Animatiors are just money so that''s not an issue, we''ll pay low wage workers in animation factories in Korea to do the animation lol.
thanx again,

peace
