Okay, much like floorcaek, this convention of GameDev has baffled me for some time. Could I get a brief history lesson on where it came from and why it's hilarious?

I think it started with the text based adventure games...?

So, if you're character found rope, you could do actions(ues, etc), and eating rope is funny , so yeah...I don't really know. Just a shot in the dark.

It beats me where it came from, but I imagine doing so would result in stomach pains and severe constipation.

I always thought it just meant hanging yourself. But with you kids and your crazy text-based adventure games, who knows anymore!

You are having a hard time getting it all down.
Stop eating? [Y/n] n
You choke over your food.
You die.
You had in your posession:
- a partly eaten rope.
- an unopened jar of peanut butter.
Vanquished creatures:
- 42 rope golems.
- a kitten.
You have failed to beat your previous score of -3.
Try again? [Y/n] n
Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other

``meme''''.

> eat rope

No, "inside joke," or "fad". The application of "meme" to forum jokes is an incorrect use of the term. A meme is a unit of shared information that underlies a culture. They are aspects of culture that are learned through observation of how the affect behaviour. For example, in western culture, observing that people give you weird looks when you talk to them in an elevator will clue you in to the meme that talking to strangers in confined quarters is a faux pas. Saying, "Eat Rope" does not define a culture any more than saying, "Wassup" defined American culture during the earlier part of this century. Besides, memetics in genral is an incredibly controversial field, as it really has yet to provide any insightful results to anything.
