Project name: Quake2World Brief description: Quake2World is a Free, standalone first person shooter video game. Our goal is to bring the fun and excitement of straightforward old-school death-match gaming to a more contemporary platform, and perhaps to a new generation of gamers. The game has officially been in development for 13 months, and will be released 2nd quarter 2008. Target aim: Quake2World is FLOSS. The source code is GPL, and we hope that the vast majority of our art assets will be GPL or CC. Compensation: None. Quake2World development is done on a volunteer basis. Technology: The game engine is a pure c implementation, and uses OpenGL for rendering. Other libraries such as SDL, cURL, ncurses, zlib, and MySQL have been leveraged to increase portability and functionality. The game currently runs on Win32, GNU/Linux, and FreeBSD. It does compile on Mac OS X, but we are lacking the test hardware to maintain a Mac build at this time. The engine supports .md2 and .md3 models, and all popular image formats for textures. Talent needed: Creative Lead: In addition to being a creative visionary, this person must have strong organizational skills and self-discipline. Prior leadership experience is strongly preferred. Duties will include influencing and overseeing the creative direction for the project, recruiting artists, creating project plans, delegating tasks, obtaining regular status, and tracking progress against milestones. 2D Artists: You must possess strong Photoshop/Gimp skills, and have experience texturing 3D meshes via UV coordinate mapping. Most meshes you'll be asked to skin will fall in the 300-1000 poly range, and require a wrap of 512x512px, diffuse only. Other misecellaneous 2D artwork opportunities exist as well. 3D Artists: You'll be asked to produce low to medium resolution meshes at a steady but reasonable pace. You'll be asked to communicate status and progress to project leadership. Proficiency in Blender is preferred, but an ability to output MD3 models the only firm technology requirement. All: Our team coordinates and communicates via IRC. If you are not comfortable with, or are opposed to IRC, you will not be a good fit for our team. Team structure: See this page. I'm the project founder and technical lead, and have been steadily developing the core platform for the past 24 months. Website: The project website is http://quake2world.net. You may also find our CIA.vc stats interesting. Contacts: The best way to contact us would be to join #quetoo on irc.freenode.net. You may also email me at jdolan _at_ jdolan.dyndns.org. Previous Work by Team: Most contributing members are accomplished IT professionals, and have involved with and contributed to the gaming community for years. Personally, some of my prior software projects can be viewed here. Additional Info: What sets Quake2World apart from other FOSS shooters is that we have set out to recapture a lot of the fun our team members experienced as teenagers, cutting our teeth on games like DOOM and QuakeWorld. In this regard, Quake2World is poised to be a great success. We are not focused on competing with current commercial titles in the realm of visuals or gameplay gimmicks. Instead, what we are focused on, is fast fragging and brutally straightforward deathmatch play, with high replay value. It is also worth noting that our team members are, by and large, open source advocates. We hold an excellent working relationship with other FLOSS shooters such as Alien Arena and UFO:Alien Invasion, and try to give back to the community as often as possible. Feedback: ANY

Do you have an online portfolio of your previous work? Which position are you interested in?

I am not professional artist. So I don't have a portfolio. I can use gimp.

Hm, well, I'll need to see some of your previous work before we can move forward. You can always email me some .jpg's, worst case scenario. Email address above.

Bump. We suffered a brief hosting outage but are back online, and still in search of help.

The renowned Quake deathmatch level Aggressor was recently ported to Quake2World. But we're still desperate for modelers and texture artists, and for someone to take the reigns in the Creative Lead role.

Thank you jbadams for un-retiring my thread :)

Here are some new level shots showing off things like GLSL per pixel dynamic lighting, coronas, weather effects, sunlight, phong shading, etc. We're quite pleased with how our levels are coming together, but we really need your help creating and skinning our items, weapons, and player models.

Just for clarification is this a full mod of the Quake 2 engine? Also, don't you need some kind of liscense to distribute a Quake based game unless it's like a freeware mod?

I get the impression that you completely skipped the initial post.

Nope, read it all. I guess its built on your own engine but still, if you use Quake stuff, unless you have a liscense to sell/distribute that content in your engine you could possibly be sued.

Well, of course, if that were the case. But we don't distribute any id Software content. id is actually aware of the project and holds no objections.

*Edit, I suppose your comments were in regard to the level remakes depicted in my screenshots. Not sure if you're aware, but the original Quake .map sources were released under the GPL a few years ago.

Ok :) I knew the code was released but I didn't think game content was ever released for public use typically. Just making sure your project doesn't hit any unseen roadblocks later on.

Right, fair enough. Yea, I've tried to be very diligent about acquiring art assets through legal paths. Even if the game has borrowed assets in placeholder status at the moment, it will never be publicly released as such.

Thanks for giving me an opportunity to clarify that, actually. As you probably won't be the only person to wonder about those issues.

do you still need modelers?
I am a learning amateur, still at school in Yr 10. I currently have an empty portfolio, but I can model low poly characters from about 100-1000.
Please contact me at my email:
aristo[dot]scorpia[at]gmail[dot]com
and my msn, which I never seem to use :P
I am currently in 2 amateur game dev teams, both seeming to go nowhere, so I am applying because I want to join a serious project.

EDIT: Oh, and I use blender :P

Hi, thanks for replying. The short answer is 'Yes!', we could still use some help on the modelling front. Still, where we're really lacking right now is the texturing side of things. So, if you're skilled in that area, you could potentially fill an extremely vital role on the team. But sure, there are quite a few models pending as well. Are you able to join the project's IRC channel?

I've PM'ed you this message as well. Hope to talk to you soon,
