Hi, I am trying to build my math skills up starting with arithmetic, algebra, trig, geometry, calculus etc. My question is what types of maths (sub categories of the above?)are involved with Bayesian approaches, Markov chains, monte carlo methods etc. Thanks for any help you can give. Maybe even certain books or links too? Thanks alot!

In terms of understanding Bayesian approaches there is an excellent book which you can buy and get most of online: PROBABILITY THEORY: THE LOGIC OF SCIENCE by E. T. Jaynes

There are even application chapters on image reconstruction (and by inference image recognition).

You may also find Geometric Algebra to be a useful avenue to study (e.g. try here), there have been some interesting works using GA for camera parameter estimation etc. which may have relevance to image recognition (plus the profound insights GA gives :).

The Wikipedia is usually a good place to start for references and links since you've already mentioned most of the search terms you'll need :)

Hello, and thanks for the reply! That was exactly the answer I was looking for.

I did what you suggested and saw that Bayesian approaches are related to probability calculus etc.

I was a communication arts major now teaching myself math and programming. I am following the "Mathematics and Physics for Programmers" book in the mathematical learning steps. Arith, trig, geo, calcu etc. Is this the proper approach to take...not moving forward until the previous level is mastered? Thanks for your help and any suggestions will be used!

If you want to know maths and physics for games then the mechanics module we learn in maths was useful.
Wiki has some good info :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_mechanics

and vectors and dot product come in useful:
