I'm posting some additional art needs that we have:

Talent needed:
1) Texture Artist
  • Experience using popular 2D art packages to create textures and bump maps for low- and high-poly 3D models
  • Must be familiar with UV mapping
  • Must have a basic working knowledge of how 3D game engines work (blending and rendering states, vertex and pixel shaders, etc.)
  • Must be able to supply a portfolio or similar sample of your work
We're currently looking for an additional texture artist to augment our art team. You'll be working primarily on maps for large, capital class, space vessels. These range from fighter carriers to battlecruisers. They require attention to a high level of detail, and experience in science fiction genre art is preferable. You can contact me if you're interested, or with any questions you may have. I can be reached me via MSN messenger or e-mail at dclark@reactorinteractive.net.

I would like to point out that even if you don't feel like you meet the posted requirements, don't be shy! We'd love to hear from as many people as we can. Here are some examples of our team’s work. If you enjoy art like this, give our team a shot!

Please, even if you are still learning and just want some experience doing art from concept designs or a boost to your portfolio, drop me a PM. Dedication and willingness to learn are what we are looking for.

I've not heard of this project before but I'm very impressed by your achievements, especially getting presentations and so on.
I'm a professional freelance developer, so I wondered if you have the kind of funds to pay market rates, or are really preferring people to do this as a hobby and a way to get an awesome CV?

We are currently an unfunded project, all of us contributing part time. Our goal is to complete version 1.0 of the game for PC so that we can prove the game concept and prove the capability of our team to deliver a finished product. Our ultimate goal is to be able to secure enough funding to be able to pay a development team full time to port the game to Xbox 360 for an Xbox Live or Xbox Live Arcade release, and turn the company into a self-sustaining development studio. So yes, great CV experience if nothing else, but these could turn into paid positions at some point.

I seriously shouldn't be seeing these posts so often. People should be JUMPING on this chance.

I've worked with the Sector 13 team in the past and if you have the talent, the time, and are looking to join a game project, the only reason NOT to join this team is because you don't want to succeed.

This opportunity it tailor made for someone to get, at the least, a commercial quality title on their resume/CV and quite possibly a full time career making games.

I agree with you. If I was able to afford the time for hobby projects, I'd be VERY interested.

Promising to commit 20 hours a week is hard for someone who already has a full time job. The guy who has not gotten a job in programming yet might think he is not up to the task, or unable to afford working for free right after school.

Really, although the project looks exceptionally good, I wonder who actually applies for this kind of job.

Nevertheless, good luck to you, HanSoLo, and to Sector 13.

I did not mean to imply that a 20 hour per week commitment is easy or within everyone's means. However, a significant portion of this site's population is looking to use independent game development work as a springboard into the game industry.

Completing a game is, from an industry standpoint, probably the most beneficial independent experience one can have and a commercial quality game using the latest technology (like Sector 13) is even more valuable.

A developer can start their own project (anything but the smallest of them would probably take them more than 20 hours per week to complete) or join one of a number of excellent and succeeding independent projects. Failing projects, however, outnumber succeeding projects by a large margin and, even among successes, Sector 13 stands out as one of the best and has a greater chance than most of them to become a commercial title in its own right.

In conclusion, Sector 13 represents an attractive opportunity that matches up very well with the goal of a large number of community members and I'm surprised that they don't have more applicants than they know what to do with.

Thanks again for the support everyone. Your kind words are very much appreciated.

I do want to clarify on the 20-hour commitment. I, in running this project for several years now, have a wife, a son, a mortgage, a day job as a project management professional and many other normal life commitments. However, we keep that time commitment blurb in all our recruitment posts as a way of both showing the commitment that we as a team have to this project, and also to try and do a little bit of up-front screening of those would very casually join us. Some of the members of this team have been with us for years now, and I consider them close friends and partners, even though some of them I have never met in person. We're looking for more people like that - people who will share the vision of this game with us, share our dreams to one day do this for a living, and just generally commit to do what they say they will do as this team relies on each other a lot to come through.

So no, 10-20 hours is not a rule we hold fast and hard - we've NEVER kicked someone off this team, as those who aren't dedicated usually drift away anyway once they see that this is very serious and hard work. But it's also work that we love doing and are committed to seeing it through.

Again, my compliments on this project.
It is such a great program, and this time around, I'd like to compliment whoever has done work on the space-backgrounds (ie. Nebulae, stars, and planets).

You work on this project since 2005 I guess. I've heard of it over the time, on the Internet. I am still impressed of the work that has been done. I work on something similar, in space, also.

Anyway, I just wanted to wish you good-luck guys and all the best -- some words of encouragement are always welcome. ;)

Thank you pr3 - the encouragement is VERY much appreciated.

We have added two new members to our team so far as a result of this post and are talking to a few more potential team members this week - we are very much encouraged by the great response to this post, so thank you everybody.

It's not too late though, if anyone else out there would like to contact us, please don't hesitate!
