I was wondering if anyone had advice about selling software/games online? My next piece of software is going to be a simple 3D pool game. But once I put it on my website, submit it to download sites etc. what more can I do except for handing out leaflets with the URL on in the street? The only other thing I can think of is to make your website interesting to the general public at large but then you will just attract visitors who don't really want your game in the first place. Its a conundrum.

Your question is not about selling. Your question is about marketing.
The title of your post made it sound like you were offering answers about marketing, not questions.
Anyway, now you get to research marketing. Must be lots of resources out there. You could just try googling "how to market products," "online marketing tips," stuff like that.
But now you begin to see what it is that game publishers have to offer.

Marketing eh? I would read a book about marketing but the very idea makes me want to curl up in a little ball in the corner and go to sleep. I guess that's why I'll never be a millionaire!

Well, sure. Me too. But that's what you asked.
