Hi, yet even another thread about tiles... I'm just beginning on my first tilebased game and have been looking for the best way to do this, how to store tiles & the map. I've looked at tilemap-editors like TileStudio & Mappy and they are including data like boundries, animations and such in the map-data, but I feel it would be better to put this into a tileset-datafile and have the map just have indexes to the tiles + another layer for sprite-indexes. Possible tile datafile-structure would then be: properties, numberOfFrames, frame1Tile(tileimage), frame1delay, frame2Tile, frame2delay..... properties would then be bits solid sides, animated, deadly and so on. I haven't found a tileset-editor which works like this, are there anyone or is this not the way to do it ? Comments are greatly appreciated ! :-)

I would personally not fool with making your own map editor, if you are just interested in making a 2D game. I've used mappy, and found it short in a few areas, but overall it was sufficient.

Anyway, unless there is something I am missing, the way you described is basically how all tile maps do it. And as long as you have the the necessary data in the file, and can load it, I wouldn't worry too much about its actual binary structure.
