I am trying to decide on webhosting. after asking around i am deciding between vpslink (their cheapest package) and dreamhost. http://vpslink.com/compare/vpslink-hosting-plans/ https://signup.dreamhost.com/#step2 i'd like to install trac. i'm not sure how easy/hard it would be under vpslink. also i dont know how many users i can have commiting and updating from trac at once w/o going over the 64mb limit. I probably wont have trouble but then again i dont know what os+LAMP+svn+trac+another package footprint will be.

I can't speak to vpslink since I've never used them before, but I have been with Dreamhost for two years now and I'm very pleased. Every host will have bouts of downtime, Dream included, but Dreamhost's support is very communicative and their feature-to-price ratio is quite favorable to the customer.

I'll second DreamHost. They have amazing support, offer awesome features, and they're exceptionally inexpensive if you're able to prepay (I don't say willing, because with the 90-day money back guarantee, you don't have much to worry about).

I have no idea how much they'll like Trac, though. I strongly suggest you ask them beforehand (forums might work, but the contact form is probably better).

You should be aware that on shared hosting, the two resources most in contention are CPU and RAM, so you need to make sure you won't use more than your fair share.

I'd recommend slicehost over dreamhost. I've had dreamhost for a year and have had problems with performance even on a low traffic website. They claim they don't oversell, but it certainly seems like they do if the performance is any indication.

Have you contacted support about the problem? Most of the complaints I hear about DreamHost are generally from people that want it to just work flawlessly all the time without them ever having to contact support. Those people should look at hosting that is a few orders of magnitude more expensive than DreamHost (and/or has fewer features for a similar price). DreamHost support is fast and helpful, but you have to let them know when you have a problem.

At that price range, DreamHost is very good in terms of features and mediocre to poor in terms of performance. I just left them for a 10x more expensive VPS plan from MediaTemple. If you want good performance, find an inexpensive VPS host like SliceHost. If it doesn't really matter that your personal blog has a few hours of unplanned downtime and a day or so of unexplained outrageous slowness each month (after all, you only really have 15 visitors each month), then DreamHost is just fine.

In the final months of service I had with Dreamhost, I had to contact them numerous times because things were broken (MySQL was down, websites were unresponsive or extremely slow). Months of the constant problems was more than I could take, so I move away from them. Initially they were fine, but over time things really took a beating and I had enough.

Their support was great for the most part. A few times it took them over 24 hours to get back with me, fortunately however, not when my sites were down.
