OK, everyone. Here's my first draft of a Christmas list. I've got to fill it out a lot more to give my extensive family more awesome things to fight over buying me :-D What cool stuff did I miss that you would buy for yourself if your $10-$100 didn't matter to you at all? What's on your wish list this year? Iron Man Left 4 Dead (PC) Bioshock (PC) Heated Car Blanket HTC Touch Pro (Only $299 upgrade on my current plan with Sprint!) A better mouse The Dark Knight A moderate graphics card update Cold Stone Creamery gift cards A nice computer headset (with mic) Intel X-25M SSD (Make my laptop 10x faster!) Fit-PC Slim (I'll find something devious to do with it, don't worry) At least 10,000 of these amazing neodymium magnets The tiniest 8GB flash drive available Remind me to check this with my luggage A sweet USB LightScribe-enabled DVD burner (Don't forget to include LightScribe-able DVDs!) Help me record good sound on my laptop! iPod Projector! Logitech Harmony universal remote Two walking sticks Ruger 10/22 rifle (Recommended by a real redneck) Edit: I only feel a little bad that Promit posted that other thread at exactly the same time I posted this one. All I'm currently wanting is an iPod Shuffle, and I'll most likely buy that myself. I'm stuck - I think I've collected all the stuff I need. Maybe a second monitor for my development computer, or some nice rugs for the floor? Or a really nice pair of headphones?

I'm hoping to get a new cheap guitar amp sometimes soon because I had to sell my half stack to help with moving costs / keeping my family afloat a few months ago. I'll be spending what money I have on my family.

i have all the ssd's i need (2x mtron 64gb, 1x mtron 32gb 1.8" for the 12" notebook)

i soon get my xperia (if i like it when in my hands to test)..

i have my tiny windows home server (an atom dualcore) which works great (including clickonce app store on iis + sql server + auto torrent downloads etc)..

actually no, from a tech point of view, i don't really need anything for christmas. same from dj point of view...

lets see what my gf finds for me :) but that doesn't have to be tech related inany way *naughty* :)

A donation to charity maybe, instead of being so selfish. Is this what Christmas has become? :(

I had not viewed Promit's post before posting here and did not understand this at first. Perhaps there is hope after all.

This isn't my $100 being spent here; this list is for my family, who is bothering me for what I want for Christmas. As for me, I don't hold back charitable contributions until Christmas (I've donated more than a month's salary to charities this year).

And yes, this is what Christmas has come to, so let's enjoy it [grin]

Well people can make donations on your behalf you know.
I am not religious at all yet I too have been asked by family members what I would like for Christmas and my birthday (which is the 26th), I simply told them that I do not want anything. Money is tight for most people at the moment and they do not need to be spending extra money which they do not have, yes I know spending is the best for the economy but that is not my concern. Your mileage may very on this issue but this was what I thought was the best as I do not need for anything.

Well, I'm pretty sure the original festivals of the time didn't concern themselves with that and in the christian xmas story jesus is given gifts... so, it's not like it's "become" anything.
(yes, feel free to donate but also feel free to not try to 'guilt trip' people either).

As for myself, my list is likely to consist of a few books which is about all I need. I see Xmas and my b'day as a chance to stock up on books to read.

You're lucky if that line works. I've been using it for years, and I've started supplying lists of stuff because they're going to spend the same amount on stuff for me regardless of my wishes, and I'd rather have things I'll actually make use of.

Story? are you referring to the nativity play or the supposed birth of jesus in relation to gold, frankincense and myrrh? Which I am led to believe were not given until a couple of years after his birth.
There was me thinking people celebrated Christmas because jesus was their savour and it was a time to be with friends and family not to fulfil wish lists.

Me too. For me, providing a wish list is much more about reducing stress for people who are going to buy me gifts regardless. It's far easier on everyone to have a good list of presents that you want, rather than stuff you'll store in a box and never use yet feel too guilty to throw away. I prefer the role of buying and giving gifts at Christmas to receiving them, because it's nice find a good present for someone. But getting a few nice presents myself feels good too.

Sorry to shake you out of your bubble but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that while people might well link Xmas with the birth of Jesus (*cough*wrongtimeofyear*cough*) the majority of them don't think of him as a 'savour'.

For the majority of people Xmas is nothing more than a time of celebration and the giving of gifts (and some much wanted time off work/away from school/college) at the end of the year. In many cases, before the church effectively hijacked the existing festivials to prompt their own way of doing things, this was what they were to start with; nothing more than celebrations.

And yes; story.
Sure, there was a guy called Jesus around then, but the rest... well, maybe he was a guy with some good ideas, but to myself (and many others) the rest will be nothing more than a story.

Right. Consensus: Modern Christmas really is about random gift-giving and themeless celebration.

So back to my question. Whaddaya want for Christmas?

Neodymium magnets lose their fun really quick. I must be getting too old. (19). I don't really get any presents really.

I'm driving to Florida to relax on the beach. Should be nice. The only other things on my Christmas list every year has been a kitten, but my mom doesn't want one. Maybe this year will be different *sigh*

I want a pair of new snowboarding boots.

If you end up choosing your own, I highly recommend these:

Forum Recon Boa boots. I got them a couple years ago, and they're the most comfy thing ever. And no laces or latches, just turn the crank to exactly how tight you want them.

I want a PS3 and Little big planet! I want it so bad I think I'm going to buy it and give it to myself as a xmasgift. :D I already got Fallout 3 and L4D, otherwise I would have wished for those to.. I'm also thinking about Mirror's edge, but haven't decided yet.
Oh, and I also want a new mouse and keyboard in black to match my computer, and a headset, and a new portable HD since the old one broke when I accidently stepped on it last week, and a surround-system (4/5.1) for the TV would be nice, and also a NAS with support for raid5 (4x 1Tb discs).. and also world peace! ... or perhaps world peace can wait if I just get the PS3 >:)

i always ask my mates not to buy me anything because i wont be getting them anything back, then they dont do it anyway out of feeling uneasy, it's a nice arrangement we have, with family and my girlfriend etc you can't really say that.

i just hand my ma a cheque for a few hundred quid every year (since i'd be raped on postage sending stuff to ireland anyway) since undoubtedly her and da buying gifts for a family of 8 kids would knack the account a bit, then that way i can also opt out of buying 9 individual family members presents which would knack MY account (and brain)

for my girlfriend though i enjoy getting her gifts more than any form of seasonal obligation

back to the OP, i have actually no idea what i would like, i would happily go without really. i have my pc, a few geektoys and clothes and there's nothing else i particularly need or want, which makes it a bit difficult for people buying for me HA!
